Travel to India with 7 year old August
Hi
Which places in Kerala around would be of interest to a seven year old boy?
We are coming to India in August for 3 weeks and if not in Kerala, which other city or state would you suggest ?
He wants to see a snake charmer, any in Kerala?
Thanks

some of the ktdc resorts have tree-houses (munnar or thekkady) - that might be fun for a kid. if he enjoys beaches, kovalam near trivandrum is a nice getaway. if he is into elephants, some of the national parks might interest him. finally, there are some elephant training places in kerala that allow kids to come & watch & even play with the elephants (like giving them a bath), so that might interest him.

Hi Mommyofboy, The elephant training camp at Kodanand , where you could bathe the elephant and feed it , would be of interest to him i assume.Make FortCochin as your base and you could do a trip to Kodanad , near Kothamangalam ( 2 hours from FortCochin) . you have to be there early so that you can see the elephants being taken to the periyar river near by and join the mahouts in bathing the elephants afterwards spend some time with them
August is also the time for snake boat races , the famous one being Nehru Trophy boat race , 11 August at Punnamada in Alleppey. There are couple of others as well in the backwater regions of Kottayam and Alleppey district. This is 1 & 1/2 hours from FoortCochin . so you could think of spending a couple of nights here . The younger friend would also be interested in watching this event i assume
Munnar is a hill station , famous for tea plantations. You can stay here a couple of nights , Trip to Eravikulam national park to see Nilgiri Thar , a mountain goat would be an activity that would be of interest to him
Thekkady is a wild life / nature reserve. There is a boating in lake periyar here , to see wildlife at close quarters, Seeing elephants , deer, bison etc in wild , this is the best choice
Now to end your trip, you can choose the between the beaches of Marari ( 2 hours to Cochin airport ) , Varkala ( 4 hours to Cochin airport ) or Kovalam ( 30 minutes to Trivandrum Airport) . so based on your return flight you can choose the beach destinations
August last week is the time for Onam celebration , a harvest festival and holiday time here . you could witness various cultural events organised by governments as well as otehr organisations during these days , to have an idea of a local event , contact the hotel/ resort where you are staying
so you could arrive at Cochin airport
Spend 3-4 days at FortCochin
2-3 days Munnar
2 Days Thekkady
3-4 days at Backwaters of Kumarakom or Alleppey
a week at any of the beaches of Kovalam/ Varkala/ Marari
the state tourism department website www.keralatourism.org is a good source for information on places to see , stay and visit
happy holidays

seeing a snake charmer ? it would be possible if you are lucky
these days you don't see many of them as there is strick law enforcements and handling many of snake varities is punishable
but you do see them occasionally around festival time and events
keep your eye opened , you might be lucky
Thanks for all the ideas. Will post more questions after finalize destinations.
Thanks
