Travel from Chennai to Munnar
Hi
I've planned to travel to Munnar with my wife and kid. I was wondering if somebody could advise me about how to goto Munnar. Should I goto Cochin or Madurai? Is it possible to get a cab to travel to Munnar? Would I be able to book for trips around Munnar after reaching? Really appreciate your help and guidance. Thanks in advance. Prasad |

Prasad, welcome to IM..
With wife and kids from Chennai (iff budget is not too much of a concern), I would strongly recommend booking a cab. Yes, you can book trips in and around munnar when you get there and this is not high season either.. so you must be OK. Have a good trip.

Thanks for the response
Hi Karthik
Thanks for the reply. I actually missed the most important question of all. When is the best time to travel to Munnar? How much does a cab cost from Cochin? Do you have any idea. Thanks, mate. Prasad |

Cochin to Munnar
Prasadha, I forgot to mention, I personally would think twice
about going to Munnar during monsoon season,June,July,August. how did you intend getting to cochin from chennai, if you planned on travelling by road, you may as well deviate from madurai and go direct to Munnar. Rgds Vandy ![]() |

Some years back I visited Munnar in August for a few days. Celebrated our Independence day in the bus stand with all the staff and other passengers
. Absolutely enjoyed my stay as it drizzled occasionally and was slightly misty. Magical! But then again one can never predict the weather, be prepared for a lot of rain also.

The distance between Chennai and Munnar is about 600 kilometres. If you had to hire a car in Kerala, the price would be Rs. 7 per kilometre which adds up to Rs. 8400 (1200*7). Add to this a few hundred rupees for the driver's accommodation which you have to pay even if he chooses to sleep in his car. The rate may be lower in Tamil Nadu. Depending on how long you stay in Munnar, you could end up paying Rs. 8400 twice if you send the driver back after arrival, and you have to hire another one to take you back to Chennai. You could of course keep the driver for your entire stay in Munnar. I believe the hourly rate, when the driver is idle, is Rs. 60 an hour. Getting from Chennai to Munnar by public transport is relatively simple. There are 5 or so daily trains between Chennai and Madurai (7½ to 10 hours), and frequent buses from Madurai to Munnar (4 to 5 hours). Alternatively, you could go from Madurai to Kumily (4 hours) before heading to Munnar (4 hours). I don't think going in August will be a major problem weather wise. The Southwest Monsoon has usually calmed down by then. But it will be wet. |

Thanks for the reply
Hi Guys
Thank you for all your responses. By next week, I would know where I am staying in Munnar. I won a lucky dip with a choice of places to visit - Fort Chunwa, Luni, Munnar, Ooty, Kodaikanal and Ercaud. I chose Munnar. Hope to have a great time. Regards Prasad |

hi,
the best way to travel from chennai to munnar is train and then cab.from chennai to munnar by cab will get too tired and bour. try this one, chennai to coimbatore by train. and then from coimbatore to munnar by cab. there were lot of trains available. coimbatore to munnar will take around 160-170 kms.coimbatore-pollachi-udumalpet-munnar. upto udumalpet the road is plain and non traffic.and then udumalpet to munnar is around 80kms 25 kms plain and 55kms hills and this one is also broad road and non traffic. so try this one. you can take a cab from coimbatore is not difficult. my advice is dont travel by cab from chennai. it will very very bour. this is my best opinion. -suresh babu. |
