@Suresh,
There are more than enough information on Wayanad in this forum. A quick search will give you the required information.
From chennai, Take Mangalore Bound train and get down at Kozhikode/calicut.
From Calicut, get any of the bus to kalpetta (there are just tooo many buses).
For Budget, you may reserve in pps tourist home (google and you will find their website).
Hiring Jeep/Cab is advisable in wayanad to visit places as virtually it's difficult to reach tourist spots by bus.
As it's just a 2 day trip, Day 1--> Club Soochipara waterfalls, Chembara peak, Pookoot lake
Day 2:- KuruwadweepIsland, Thirunelli temple and Tholeptty WLS. Get back to chennai from Calicut.
And again, about all of these places, the information is readily available in this site.
Welcome to Indiamike

PM, very well done on reaching 2000 posts, and 2000 useful posts as well.
You're now permitted to make 2000 rubbish posts.
I'll be staying for 5 daysa close to Rippon, just south of Meppadi, are there anywhere to see Elephants close by (60-90 minutes by taxi each way)?, or waterfalls that dont require a lot of trekking?

When I joined Indiamike , initially I posted 2 Hotel reviews and YOU sent a PM(As Forum Leader and a Travel Enthusiast) to me stating, My Reviews are helpful and encouraged me to share more and that's when I started getting into the forums as well. And Now on the 2000th post, the same encouraging words.. Thanks Again Steven!
Now onto your question.
Soochipara waterfalls is hardly 15 minutes by Taxi from Meppadi and
it involves 2 km walk one-way from the parking place (It won't be strenous) but this waterfalls is Just ok-kind of and it may not be visually appealing But the path(paved) and the surroundings is really good.
Chembara peak is 7 kms from Meppadi (200 metres plain walk is enough from parking place to the View point) and it's fantastic scenery and 6 kms is Via Private Tea Plantations and to top it, very very less tourists visit this place. Worth a try for the stunning scenery and the absolute silence.
Nearest Wild Elephant is at the minimal 60 minutes (one-way in Taxi) for Muthanga WLS or 75 minutes (one-way in taxi) for Tholpetty WLS .
Hope this helps. If you need more information, Please let me know.
Cheers

Those were just automated responces. (only joking)Thanks for the info, I'll look into all options.
Just one more question.
How long do you think a taxi would take from Calicut train station to Mappadi? (just trying to gauge how much of the travel time would be in the dark if we got into a taxi at 17:00 at Calicut station)

PM... can we plan for july to Wayanad? @Suresh,
It will rain a lot during July. Sometimes hours together but it will rain every day few hours.
For Sight seeing it might be a dampener. If you like enjoying watching rains from room in a Extreme Green surroudings, you wil enjoy wayanad.

My experience is not to book any guest house online- plenty of stays in this area. I had been there in October....I started from Mysore....and it was a wonderful experience.
