I always do give generous tips, esp to waiters, to cleaners and to drivers (the latter typically Rs 100 per day or single ride), and also some to doormen/watchmen. I feel like others here that it is a form of sharing my relative wealth with the hospitable and welcoming people of India. I posted here only due to the Rs 500 mentioned by rajered which seemed over the top for me, esp as advice to potential newcomers who then get a completely wrong picture about tipping amounts.
