Wink Thought I'd introduce myself...

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.
I'm 45 from Geordieland (North-East England for those that don't know) with wife, two kids and two kittens.
I'm off to Kerala next month for a family holiday. I wish I'd discovered this forum in the early stages of planning, but I ended up just using guide books and stuff to decide on the itinerary, which is:

Flying via Dubai
Trivandrum (Chowara beach) 3 nights
Train to Kottayam then Vaikom
1 night on a houseboat, 2 nights at a lake resort
Travel inland by car to Kumily for 5 nights there
then via Idduki to Cochin for 2 nights
Train back down South to Varkala for 3 nights
Back home again

Can't wait to get there.
Being a bloke, I normally leave packing to the last minute, but this time I'm packed and raring to be off !
I've been to Goa a couple of times. Also been to Delhi/Agra too and love India. This is the first time with the kids.
I'm grateful for any advice anyone has. Thank you

Smile Staying five days in Kumilly ?

Instead of staying five days in Kumilly/Thekkady/Periyar lake you should go to Munnar.

Hello and welcome to IM,

I agree with ALAIN,2 maybe 3 nights should be ample in Kumily
area, unless you specificly have some Park treks in mind in Periyar. The journey from Kumily to Munnar is really something
Special.

An exciting Activity for you considering you have kids in tow is
the Elephant washing experience near Cochin.Place is called
Kodanand Elephant Training School.

Did you not think of departing from Cochin rather than travelling all the way back to Trivandrum ?

Even though I have never been to Varkalha,I have the feeling
Cherrai Beach could be more suitable.

happy travels.

Thanks everyone. I did consider Munnar in the itinerary, but with time constraints I'm limited to two weeks holiday and didn't want to be moving every couple of days with the kids in tow. It's a compromise between a relaxing holiday and travelling around (the missus insisted we don't travel too much).
I thought Kumily would be an OK place to stop and settle for a few days (I'm staying at the Wildernest if you know it). Elephant junction is on my list, also a bit of mountain biking, walking, plantation tours and trekking in PWS. I'm sure the kids are going to love it. The flights to and from Trivandrum worked out best financially, hence the trip back down to Varkala, which I'm quite looking forward to seeing and comparing to Kovalam. I'm staying at Travancore Heritage in Chowara. Is it within easy walking distance of Kovalam beaches?
I know I've probably paid over the odds for some things, especially some hotels, but with it being the kid's first trip to India, I wanted a bit of luxury thrown in.
Thanks for your comments.
