Theyyam Festival near Kasaragod in December
(http://www.keralatourism.org/index.j...11&year=20 05)
Anybody been there in a previous year, or knows what to expect? On the one hand this is an opportunity to see many Theyyams at one place in limited time. On the other I guess it may feel artificial outside the natural temple or house environment. One other "easy" option I heard of is Parassinikadavu near Kannur, where the head priest is supposed to perform Theyyam dayly. Any feeback on that? Also, more generally, anybody knows of any other potentially interesting festivals this December? Thanks... Last edited by Black Cat : Nov 30th, 2005 at 05:56. |

Theyyam's happen mainly between the months of Dec to Feb and hence, I would say you are reaching at the earlier part of the season. On the flip side, they happen quite a lot (much more than what is given in the tourism dept webpage) in the northern districts of Kannur and Kasarkode. So if you crash into one of these districts, you would be able to check with the hoteliers/newspaper/district tourism desk and find out about other Theyyams happeneing in the next few days.
The one at Prassinikkadavu is not really a theyyam, if you have been inspired by pictures/videos of theyyam else where. The priest dresses up in theyyam attire and does a daily morning ritual. My suggestion is to go for both, this being a guarenteed viewing and a proper temple theyyam as well. Not sure if you used the search option here, but below are two threads where theyyam has been discussed a fair deal. Kannur Info!!!! I need info on Theyyam

Theyyams, Kannur
I recently stayed at Costa Malabari, owner called Kurian. He has written a book about Theyyam. There is little he doesn't know about Theyyam.
They take place most of the year actually, but of course more so during the coming season. If you want his website/email address I'll look it up. Cheers Maeve |

Hi
Kannur DTPC has published a book on Theyyam as well as Theyyam Calendar . Kurien and his Team has published a book called Festivals Of Kerala . It seems that both are out of print. |

Kurian's Book about Theyyam
I have recently read the copy of his book whilst at Costa Malabari. So perhaps he would photocopy it for anyone who wants it?
