40 is good. I am using a web TV channel which gives different information (don't have a TV). Maybe they were able to hang on to something. Let's hope it is 40 or more and not 10.

Our rescue agencies are only made to search for the dead bodies. Not for the survivors. We can never expect that they will rescue people if they reach there in the very next minute also. Becoz on the boat itself there were no enough life jackets so how can we expect our rescures to carry modern equipments that even the bangladesh or srilanka has.

Well, some have been rescued, even if we cannot rely on the numbers. There are pictures on TV now of the rescue operations, people are being brought to the shore, but some obviously dead. Resuscitation attempts...

But, as usual, the supposedly 'live' reporting is repeating the same video clips, each of a few seconds only, again and again.

Death upto 30

Latest news says that 30 persons have dead. The reason for the accident was because of when the travelers saw elephants all persons on upper deck of the boat, move to one side for better view, and this caused the boat to sink. The very bad thing is that the boat was at the deepest portion of the lake. The tourist where majority from north India.

What the hell is the people doing there?? Now the news reports are coming that 40 Naval Sea men has started by road to Thekkady. They will take more than 4 hrs to reach there. Are they going for the rescue operations or for searching for the dead bodies?? A human being who does not know swimming will not be able to sustain in the water till navy reaches there. Are they trying to fool us?? Why cant they transport their men in Helicopters?? An eye witness from from the scene reports that there is only 3 tube lights there. Is this what we expect for the tax that we pay. We have seen rescue operation by a helicopter co pilot in US in medias. Is the same that we are also getting from our govt organizations also? The last stages of this issue that media will be reporting is "GOVERNMENT HAS ORDERED FOR A JUDICIAL INQUIRY IN TO THE MATTER". Is that for we are paying the tax. We should rethink on this and try to get the situation corrected.

helicopter is used only if you are a VVIP like chief minister......not for ordinary citizens

I expect we will hear this bullshit until the whole thing gets forgotten.

It is obvious to the most dumb-brained feeble-minded idiot, surely, that on such a boat, that passes along the shore of a nature reserve so that passengers can view the animals, that people are going to do just that ---and that, if the boat cannot take it, it is unfit and dangerous for its purpose. Apparently it was a new boat, too.

I don't imagine that there were many experienced sailors among the tourists. To blame the passengers is utterly sick.

UPDATE: death toll now 32.

Another snippet: boat designed for 60, was carrying 82.

Time to think about a control on wild life tourism in India to make sure it is both beneficial to humans and wildlife. It is high time to limit the number of access to people.

Well, this is about keeping the human wildlife alive. The Periyar reserve is so restricted, that there is only a tiny part of it that is accessible at all. We can have another thread on the other aspects, and there we can talk about the safety of the damn, and we can talk about Tamil Nadu's insistence on raising the water level --- we can talk about all sorts of stuff, but it is just not relevant here.

Allowing 80-plus people on a boat that may not have been safely designed for 60 (should a 30% overload be catastrophic?) is relevant.

Totally absurd .....where do you guys gt these information.....for VVIPS they use Sukhoi and other state of the art aircraft plus all the police the state has.

Not for ordinary people who actually pay for these rides and all.

Do they use lifejackets in these kinds of trip and even if they do is it mandatory for people to wear it or do they keep it as a show piece on the forward bow ?

Totally needless tragedy
