Not in my experience of several years of seeing her in London.

Yes, there are lots of opportunities to put money in boxes. Yes, there are lots of books and CDs and photos for sale. Yes, there are clothes and gifts for sale that would cost much less in India. But absolutely no pressure whatever.

I seem to totally clueless on this one, I know the basic idea of service but how come people start crying near her. That is some psychological outburst or something about the charged atmosphear with so many crying their eyes out in the melee?

Sorry... I gave a snap reaction that wasn't very nice... sorry.

I just get heebie jeebies when I sense a personality cult, and amma's group strikes me as one. But each to his own.

I hope that we get to hear a trip report. It will be interesting.

Thanks, DoDi, a noble response. We all have days when we say things without thinking.

I first saw her on the television in a series that super-cynic (Theroux? Louis Theroux?) did on Indian gurus. His response to most of the people he met was predictable (and, maybe, justified...). The few minutes that he spent with Amma pulled the rug from under his feet. He wasn't ashamed to admit it, nor was was ashamed to admit that he didn't understand it.

Seeing her on the TV made me want to meet her and I have done several times now. It is always a powerful and uplifting experience. No; I can't explain!

I'm not an ashram sort-of-person (ok, I've never tried) so I don't know if I'll ever go to Amritapuram. Probably will one day and might change my mind.

It is true that a huge organisation has built itself around her. I know little or nothing about this organisation, but I wouldn't expect it to be any more perfect than any other, being a group of humans, but, as far as my judgement goes, she is genuine.

I would think that a huge amount of money goes through the organisation. It does do a great deal of charity work, having schools, hospitals and providing housing, even rebuilding whole villages post earthquake, tsunami, etc.

I'm not just taking the word of the organisation's own publicity on this: I've seen it mentioned a number of times in the newspapers re tsunami relief.

I don't know how she and her aides live, but I don't believe in austerity anyway, so if they have some comfort that's fine by me.

2Cents... I'm a little disinclined to try to get to see her in India. At least in London there are only a few hundred people in the queue!

2cent, thanks for the prelude, as I understand about spiritual things (which is next to nothing being atheist for 35 years) either it happens to you when you are at fag end of some long resident emotion or you may look at rituals as mare props that are spewed forth essentially to keep the multi channel communication with spiritual guru or god, in some cases. While many people on different wavelengths relate to them in own unique way. Still it all boils down to personal evolvement, mental makeup and will power to an extent. Just my opinion there while I agree that all others have their valid viewpoints too.

Did anyone hear the story about amma that right before the tsunami hit, she told her devotees to run, to take care of themselves and everyone near her ashram? Then the tsunami hit and no one in the ashram's surrounding environs were hurt or killed. This was a story that was emailed around to Chicago area yoga instructors. She was supposed to come to the Chicago area, but is sending someone else, as she is staying in India to help with tsunami damage.

I don't know that story; might be myth, might not.

But I did see in yesterday's newspaper that her organisation is to build over 6,000 houses for tsunami victims. I think they have been a lot more efficient in providing aid, so far, that government organisations.

2cents, I am sure that what you say is true of many an organisation and, when in cynical mode (which is often), I sometime think that all one needs is a good story and good marketing to become revered (and rich). There is one such person, adored world-wide, who I would not cross the road for (well, I would: to get to the other side!).

Whether or not any of it is true of Amma's organisation I have no idea. She doesn't seem to have the self-important-holy attitude that encourages the same in followers.

The very fact that people are not only allowed but encouraged to get close probable helps: she is no "Guru in a gilded cage".

Whilst she has 'senior' people who teach her teachings, that she is herself so accessible means that no one can say, "You can't go near the big, holy guru: you have to take the teaching from me only".

Maybe it is all psychological/emotional: but, if that is the case, so what? It seems to be free of psycho-economic mind games (eg pay me money to tell you what's wrong with you and then pay me more to 'cure' you).

I don't believe that she is an incarnation of a god ...but then I don't believe Jesus was, either. It doesn't bother me that she/her followers believe that.

om namah shivaya

i was in the ashram when the tsunami came there!!

about half an hour before it all happend (amma was giving dharsan that time)
she told a few bramacharis to stand on the temple roof and look at the sea.
about a few minutes later she stopt huggin people and sad: the ocean is coming!!!! and start doing darshan again!!!

then half an hour later the wave came and flushd quite some stuff away.

of course if ur inj ammas ashram ur protected by her so no worries!!!

amma instructed for everyone to pick there passport up at the office and cross the backwaters and go to the computer college nearby!

amma left as last person after everyone was safe.
nowbody was hurt in or around the ashram by ammas grace!!!

the elepants where lockd into the temple and the other animals where saved asswell.

after a couple of houres amma took her sari of and placed it in the water and at that moment the water went back into the ocean!

we still had to wait 6 days to return to the ashram coz it was quite a mess and the hole toilet system was fuckd up.

after that everyone started helping cleaning up the mess.

i witnessd everything by my self.

i had so many wonderfull experiences with amma that im for sure she is the real deal!! no doubt.

we are all part of amma. amma is in all of us, she is the divine incarnation
from the highest source

by the way: ammas organisation has been spending over 23 million dollar on the tsunami relief project!!!!
