Taxi & Houseboat Rates in Kerala in November 2009

We (four adults) intend to travel to Kerala in the next week or so.

Our itinerary : Land at Cochin Airport on Day 1 and take taxi to Amritapuri (with some shopping for spices at Ernakulam/Kochi on the way). Day 2 at Amritapuri. On Day 3 take taxi to Kumarakom and stay overnight in a houseboat. Take taxi on Day 4 to Cochin Airport for the flight back home.

Q1) Should we hire a taxi for all 4 days at Cochin and retain the same taxi or should we hire a taxi for each segment separately.

Q2) What sort of amount are we talking in either case?

Also we need to book a 2-bedroom A/C houseboat for one night.

Q3) Should we book in advance or should we book when we reach Kumarakom?

Q4) What amount are we talking for the houseboat?

Q5) Does any operator offer to pickup in housebaot from Amritapuri and drop at Kumarakom or Alleppey the next day (saves us the taxi)?

No. You will be spending too much of money

House boat cost around 6k

He has quoted me 9.5K whereas all online operators that I have found through google have quoted 8K-8.5K. If he actually owns the boats, he should have been cheaper than the rest.

I told him to match the rates but he was not inclined so I told him to forget it ... he then told me to call him up on the day of hire and he will offer a better rate.

Looks like he loves to draw a hard bargain ... but the question is ... will I waste my time to call him time and again?????

A/C Mahindra Renault Logan has been hired by me for 5,600/- and 4 days which includes driver bhatta, tolls, parkings and 400 km. run. Extra km above 400 @ 12 per km. I think the deal is good since the car can fit 5 adults without squeezing each other and also fit luggage in its 500 litre boot.

Will post the details of the car and its owner if I am happy with the service so that other IndiMikers can benefit.
