| How far south? The next tourist place would be Chowara with some of the posh resorts, like Travancore Heritage, but a nice beach. No idea whether there is budget accomodation, too. In Poovar there is a lagoon and again some resorts. It's beautiful, but the beach on the lagoon can't be recommended for swimming. The beaches further down are beautiful sandy beaches, but not developed for tourists. Mostly there are fishermen villages. Maybe you could specify what you are exactly looking for, than I can give more helpful answers. | |

| south of kovalam Thanks Frederica for your reply, I was looking at an alternative to Kovalam or Varkala as I arrive at Trivandrum airport at 3am on 14 December so would be looking at somewhere nearby for first few days and also on my return need to be reasonably close to the airport over new years eve as I fly back 5am, 2 January.I guess Im looking for a hidden gem, a quiet place to relax (ahhhh)on a pretty beach before rejoining the rat race in 2009! | |

| We (my husband & I) stayed in 2006, January, in Poovar. It was my very first experience of India. We stayed in a "hidden gem" type of place which is not cheap, and even less so nowadays. It is called "Friday's Place" and is situated on an island, or rather a series of small islets, in the Neyyar River, not very far from Vizhinjam. As Federica says, the beaches are beautiful to look at but not suitable for swimming because of tremendous currents. There are hardly any tourists. Lots of fishermen. As for cheap accommodation, you would find it more likely nearer to Kovalam, I think. Anyway, it is a beautiful part of Kerala. Poovar itself seems (seemed to me nearly 3 years ago) unspoilt. | |

| Thapovan is a mid-range hidden gem, just to the south of Kovalam

Maybe you have to find the hidden gem by yourself, just consider that the local fishermen have a very different culture and it should be respected. "Normal" tourism and their lifestyle seems a cultural clash to me. | ||
