Spent the millenium new year there. If you can afford it, definitly you should go for it. One of the best resorts in kerala. The only one that can match the somatheeram is the neighbouring surya samudra.
I suggest somatheeram this time around and surya the next visit. nostalgic me ![]()

In a tourist resort, you always get a tourist version. Tourism / holidays and Ayurveda do not mix well.

(I agree with palmlandtours.net: "Tourism / holidays and Ayurveda do not mix well.") If you attach importance on treatment quality my recommendation is "the treatment house" (great doctor!!!) http://www.treatmenthouse.com Have a good time anyway! ![]() |

For most of us, it is a little extra experience, rather than a genuine medical need, and we tend to go for the massage stuff, which is really only a small part of ayurveda.
I'm not sure how well we would get on with the non-tourist version! I've been given recommendation for a college here in Chennai --- but you only get a wooden table to lie on, no cushion or anything, and I don't think my skinny body could stand it. I did have good experience at Thapovan in Kerala. I was so relaxed after the massage I could hardly move for the rest of the day. I went back the next day and asked to be woken up again: I left feeling sparkling! I didn't notice any apparent difference in the method, smell of the oils, etc, but the effect was completely different! The facilities were pretty good too, with seven (I think) totally separate treatment rooms.

Palmland has a point here to be supported.
It may be true the normal places do not have softies to satisfy the western clients . Also note real ayurveda is not a spa like treatment option . |

There is a lot of concern about the quality of Ayurvedic treatment and 'doctors' working in Hotels. A while back a system of regulation was suggested by the state: I don't remember if that was implemented?
In a reputable place, you should receive assessment from a qualified ayurvedic doctor, and massage from an experienced ayurvedic masseur. It should be 'real' in that sense, although the luxury bits are obviously the trappings of expensive hotels rather than ayurveda! At a resort offering serious ayurvedic treatment there should also be drugs available, and maybe even diet restrictions, and the hotel kitchens should be able to feed you according to its doctor's treatment regime. I met a man once who was staying 3 months for back-problem treatment (three months next to the lake at Coconut Lagoon: Envy! Envy!). He was coming to the end of that time, and was very satisfied with everything. Most people turn to alternative medicine for chronic complaints, but it must be appreciated that any cure or relief is likely to be more than a day or two can accomplish. You can go for acute complaints too: I've had a painful mouth ulcer and travel-induced constipation treated with medicines prescribed by hotel ayurvedic docs. The bottom line of any business is profit: but some, if not many of these hotels are certainly sincere in their intentions to provide ayurvedic treatment. One place I stayed in Allepey (I went for the boat race, not the ayuveda) even was part of a group with its own Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing plant: the hotel was the add-on, rather than the treatment! |

The Kairali Ayurvedic resort is well renowned.
Situated in the scenic town of Palakkad in Kerala, the famed southern state of India, Kairali Ayurvedic Health Resort is the perfect retreat for the discerning traveler.Palakkad is well connected by rail, road and air. Palakkad is just a 6 hour drive from Bangalore . The nearest airport is Coimbatore which is just an hours drive away. From Cochin International Airport it is only 2hrs and from Calicut Airport is 2.5 hrs. Surrounded by the famed Palakkad countryside the resort is an island of peace and tranquility. Spread over an area of 50 acres, the resort is a veritable paradise. Ayurveda is practiced here in its true traditional form. The promoters have a wealth of experience in the field of Ayurveda and it is only fitting that they bring their expertise to the capital of Ayurveda, Palakkad! |
