Someone recommended Soma Houseboats http://www.somahouseboats.com for a trip around Alleppey. I've e-mailed them and have been qouted Rs.4750 for 1 nights cruise. Is this reasonable?
They also claim: "We would like to inform you that The Department of Tourism, Govt. of Kerala has introduced ratings for houseboats based on the facilities offered and Soma houseboats have been awarded "Gold Star", the highest grading." Is there such a rating? |

The Soma group is very reputed and have almost a monopoly on many of the tourism dept awards! I would trust them completly...
Houseboat rates vary a good deal depending on the season. Please advice when you are visiting? Maybe it would help to let you know that they had Talvin Singh play for them for their Millenium new year party ![]()

For your Rs.4750/- you get:
Hire of a converted rice barge Bedding (sheets, pillow cases, etc.) A beautifully prepared even meal of local food, served in the moonlight. A Personal Guide A Personal Cook An engine wallah A boatman A night to remember... In Sweden for Rs.4750/- you could get a meal for two.

For Feb, in Soma houseboats I think you are getting a very good quote. I would have expected nothing below 5k and infact towards 6k.
Try to get a quote from ATDC, for comfort and memory - I would add a 15-20% premium to upgrade to Soma. And if cost is the only criterea, then you can actually land in Alleppey and walk around the jetty hopping for better deals. I's be sure that you would get something for about 4k. |

I’m sorry if I offended someone by asking and I don't want to make this into a "India is so poor and your so rich so you must pay through your nose" debate. I definitely don’t have that much money that I can pay whatever quoted just because I’m a foreigner. I just wanted to know if Rs 4750 is a fair price for one night on a houseboat. Is it? |
