ive travelled to india before as part of a round the world trip but only went go Goa as at the time as it had all i needed. Didnt make it to kerala but heard many great things about the place. I fly again to mumbai end of august and was wondering: what airliner to fly from mumbai - kerela wheres a good start off point to meet some people, because if im being honest im scared s*hitless about going on my own this time. i want to eventually end up in delhi over the space of 2 months. any ideas? I havent done much research i just booked my second round world trip on impulse (im 24) thanks all! |

Good Day chrism,
Having been to India is a Bonus,I travel on my own to Sth India and have had no Problems. My Favourite place is Kerala and will be there in Mid October for a couple of weeks or so. There are many airlines you can take,I suggest Kingfisher,Decan, Indian Airlines,Jet Airways, just to name a few. Head for Cochin(Kochi) First,There's some good places to stay in Fort Cochin(see Hotels section, top of page)I usually stay in Homestays, cheaper, better service and usually good homecooked meals With the time you have, you should be able to have a good look around Kerala and if you want head North into Tamil Nadu, see Madurai and up to Chennai and fly to Delhi. Get yourself a Sth India Lonely Planet Guide Book, or Similar. They can be pretty usefull at times. All the best vandy ![]() |

cool, i especially like the part about homestays. im not to familiar with this though. does this involve like staying within part of a indian family or something? how much is this? Being on my own i dont want to book out to many twin rooms etc, which was pretty much the only option last time i went.
any particular place you recommend in kochi? |

[/quote] Good day, Not all Homestays have the whole Family staying there,Sometimes the owners have their own Accom nearby or stay in backrooms, depends on the size of the premises. Have you had a look in Hotels Section Yet ? In Fort Cochin,Beenas has good Review and reasonable Price.Prices for homestays vary, just like Hotels, some are basic, some Luxury, some include meals in their price, some offer Breakfast in price Have a look at site www.kerala.com Also try www.kdtc.com (kerala district tourism corporation)they MAY be able to advise where you can obtain a List of Homestays in Kerala. vandy ![]() |

Kerala is by far the easiest location for a backpacker - less poor and intense than the north - very few homeless (I have not seen people sleeping on the streets in Kerala)- few touts and generally more affluent and environmentally blessed.
Nothing to worry about - you will meet other travellers immediately. |

chrism, the website - http://www.fort-kochi.com - provides quite a comprehensive listing of places to stay, including homestays in Fort Kochi(the historical quarters of Kochi city which is also the tourist hub). As you are looking for something on the cheaper side along with a chance to hook up with other travellers, Fort Kochi would be the ideal location.

Good Day chrism,
Just looked at Hotels section and noticed Beenas has no Web site or E- Mail Address. You may be able to get some contact details from IM member Chinadolly who posted the Review,Send her a PM and see how you go. Thats a Terrific link provided by 2cents,thanks 2cents,great amount of info,I have Heard good Reviews about the following listed on that site. Raintree - Fort House - Spencer Home - Vintage Inn I had a look at Fort House when in the area and liked what I saw,Good location, reasonable rooms, big central courtyard with the Biggest Mango Tree I have ever seen,Restaraunt not too bad. I have also seen warnings about the food at the Elite Hotel, number of people have fallen sick after eating there. I'll have a look at another Travel Site where I first saw a very good review about Beenas and see if there are any contact details. Rgds - vandy ![]() |

hey guys thanks for the advice. sorry for not replying sooner i have been in prague (where my visa card got stolen and 307£ got swiped from my account!).
The plane option sounds attractive, but then again am i missing out and taking the easy option by flying there?... its only 32 hrs on the train *cough*! 800rps sounds reasonable... ill certainly look into it! only 4 weeks away now and to be fair im bricking it! |

Don't be a puss - no need for bricking, you'll find its a huge laugh. I thought you had been to India before? |

I usually only reccomend Goa for Travellers exiting India from Mumbai and need a few days to relax on the beach and recharge the batteries before heading to wherever or maybe to travellers
who are heading south after arriving in Mumbai and would like to experience Goa for a few days before travelling further south. Personally I found strolling along the beach in Allepey just as enjoyable, and certainly a lot more Peacefull. Rgds vandy ![]() |
