Thumbs up Seeking General Info on Kerela

Just a brain picking one on Kerela. This year we went to Goa, which we loved, but want something a bit quieter, hence we are off to Kerela in Feb 2006. Staying at the Travencore Heritage.

* Whats it like? Has anyone been?
* Can you get a beer there? I am not a complete alchy, but I like a beer on my Hols.
* Is is poosible/advisible to hire a moped around there?
* Someone recomended Classic Taylors in Kovalam. Do they do leather jackets? If not anyone have any recomendations?
* Places to eat in and around Kovalam that you would recomend
* House boats in the area. 1 0r 2 nights where would anyone recomend and with whom. Do they have bogs and showers on, or am I being soft?

it is a beautiful resort loccated in a nice area ,but i dont know your standerds
yes you can get beer their
i am not sure wheather they have one rental near by but it is possible , themoped willcost 2-3 $ per day and petrol 1$/littre
i really dont know about classic tailers but it sound very famous ,there was soem postings here asking for tailors, and regarding the leather jacket in keral itis a fancy item so we dont manufature them , they might be coming form soem were northern india. so could be very expensive , i think

for veg Lonely planet
for sea food Coconut grove they have indian veg too.
and for a difference Fusion and german backery

for house boats and night stay you better go to Kollam or alleppy , that is very beautiful in lakes ,it may cost 3500-4000 per night, they have toilets but iamnot so sure how many of them have shower,

enjoy your stay in gods own country

Travancore Heritage is one of the top class hotels in Poovar which keeps good standard. They have heritage cottages with open bathrooms, swimming pool etc. And moderately priced compared to similar hotels like Surya Samudra. But, not up to the standard of Surya Samudra.

Most of the houseboats would have shower, solar fans etc.

We stayed at the Abad Palmshore in Kovalam. All the places were good for food. The hotel was dry - so no beer there then! Most restaurants sell beer, but you might have to drink it out of coffee mugs, and have the bottle wrapped in newspaper. A few of the hotels have a licence to sell alcohol, but they are a bit more expensive. If you are a veggie then the food is great, otherwise it will be chicken or fish. We didn't find anywhere that sold red meat. I was having withdrawl symptoms - I am a meatatarian. The beach was fine, even if the locals use it as a public toilet. I wanted to go there for years, but I wouldn't go there for a holiday again. But that's just my point of view!!!!

Yep. A very nice place otherwise. I will visit it again probably, when I move out to Goa, but at least I know what to expect.

i'm going to south india in 10 days (10 long days) and as i'm arriving to chennai i'm going to spend some days in tamil nadu (you know: mamallapuram, pondicherry, tanjore, trichi, maduray) and after that i'm going to cross to kerala, i still don't know if overnight train to quillom (then backwater to allepey and cochin) or stopping in periyar before cochin. the thing is that i'd like to spend last days in a relaxing and beutiful place, not overcrowded (not kovalam), maybe for an ayurvedic treatment, maybe having some beers, maybe looking at the people walking down the street... What can you suggest me????

Any idea on what average time for sunset in Kerala in November? I will be travelling in Periyar, Kumarakom and Kochi.

they close only during mansoon , but many operate through out the year
i think varkala could be more cool , it is just a 45 minut train to varkala from Trivandrum so that you can allways change with out any trouble,
the hotels start from 150 and above, the hotels near the cliff may be lit bit more expensive(500-1000 ) because of the sunset views , but it is very nice ,you can have bear at any time no problem,
