Planning time in Kerala on a tight schedule

Hello all,
I plan to arrive in Kochi at around 8am from Mumbai on an early morning JA flight. Will I have time to make it to Allepey for the standard, 8-hour cruise to Kollam?

What about after the cruise ends in the afternoon/evening: will I be able to get back to Kochi the same night?

I'm essentially asking if the itinerary below could be condensed from 3 days into 2 days somehow.

Day 1: Land in Kochi at 8AM; make way to Allepey
Day 2: Backwater cruise;
Day 3: Make way back to Kochi; flight out to Mumbai

If it can't be condensed, where should I spend my extra time: Kochi, Allepey, or some other nearby place?

arrange a taxi to poothotta - get on their boat to (houseboat) fpour hours cruise on that --- then lunch
and cruise on small boats -- evening back to cochin . next day take a car to munnar on the way drop in elephant training centre --- around munnar and come back -- thiurd day walk around in fort kochi and other areas and back to mumbai -- if you want this way you can do it .
