We are also planning to do the Periyar Tiger reserve but are still not sure if the bamboo rafting or two day treck will be the best option for spotting elephants?
When are you planning to go? In the dry season, the best proposition for sighting elephants would be the first morning boat ride at 7am. There is a greater probability of sighting bisons than elephants on the whole day bamboo rafting trip, though you could well see both, and much more.

We are planning to do the two day treck next time but will plan to go in the dry season if we can. The bamboo rafting in November was great but I am sure the wildlife sightings will be better then as Synonymous says.

As far as I am aware the Lake Palace is closed and all boating is stopped. I dont know if there are plans to reopen soon. That is one reason we have decided to visit Nargarhole / Wayanad this time.
