We made a plan to visit the Elephant Camp at Kodanad & Athirapally Waterfalls from Kochi on a day trip. One has to start early in the morning for Kodanad (around 50 Kms from Kochi) as the major attraction, Bathing Of Elephants at Periyar River starts around 8.45 am & continues for an hour. It takes around One and a Half Hours to reach Kodanad From Kochi ( If you are staying at Fort Kochi , then add half an hour more) .Accordingly we started sharp at 6.45 am from Fort Kochi area.

The sky is now crystal clear with some little patches of white clouds after 6 Hrs of heavy raining last night (although our driver cum guide Vijayan was not ready to accept it as a "heavy Raining" for Kochi ).

Anyway , all of us (Myself, Mrs & our son , 4.5 Yrs now ) were very thrilled. Specially for my son it was something very very special . Just after getting into the car he started asking "Baba kakhon amra Hati dekhte pabo?" ( Baba , when will we see those elephants ?)

It's a nice morning. Early hours .. so not much traffic on the roads .. After a smooth & nice 1 Hr 50 Mnts Journey we reached Kodanad . It was already 8.40 am. So we decided to go straight to the bank of the river . After reaching there we realized that actually we were a bit early for the event . No elephant was there.

We waited for some 15 mintues .. It was so green .. so tranquil .. so beautiful .. Some photos of the Periyar River are here ..

After spending almost one & a half hours there, we resumed the journey towards our next destination , Athirapally Water Falls. We'd noticed a Shiva Temple while going to Kodanad .. We stopped there on our way back to Athirapally . A nice temple.. We found a Brihat Nandy Murti ( Giant Nandy Idol ) in the temple complex. Some photos of Shri Aimuri Mahadeva Temple at Koovappady Village ..

We entered into the waterfalls zone after buying tickets from the counter ( Entry fees : Rs 20 Per Head & Rs 10 Per Camera). Now one has to walk .. A downward journey for 10 / 15 Minutes through the forest ( a steep return journey'll take around 20 / 25 minutes ) .. The way to the falls ..

Now it's the time to go back to Kochi ( approx 60 Kms ) . We had our lunch at a wayside restaurant just infront of the entrance of the Waterfalls. I told Vijayan to drop as at the Fort Kochi sea shore. Around 5 .30 pm we reached there. The Sun was setting down .. A gentle breeze in the small island .. Got some Chinese Fishing net photos .. This TR comes to an end with those images from the Port City ..

Thanks Arpan .. Surely I'll post Trip reports about other places I visited & possibly I'll make another thread to describe it . Here I'd tried to make a thread on a possible day trip from Kochi only .. BTW, I'm following your report Megalaya .. Enjoying !

Thanks abhinanda .. This was actually the beginning of our trip .. We stayed at Kochi for 2 Nights & actually had One and a Half Day to explore the nearby places . But I spent the first Half-day in search of some Malayalam Film DVDs , which are otherwise not available on the online shopping portals (that's another story) .. So, only one full day was left & On that day day we made this day trip. I was not able to visit several places at Kochi which were in my " where to go list" due to the time constraint .. But I'll post some info on the mode of transportation I used in Kochi shortly ..

Arup, so bad of you. You have not even informed me about your thread. Anyway some other friend linked it to me and suggested that the #6 image of Nundy can be an ideal profile image for me, that's how I came to know about it. :-(

Keep on chugging
