Off the beaten track in Kerala

Welcome to God's own country
Ponmudi is a nice hill station... If you are fond of beaches then there's Kovalam. Then there's Shangumugham. And Kanyakumari is not so far either
Can drop by a weekend! Real One,
Check this site for Trivandrum..

i particularly loved trivandrum. varkala is not too far north and it is a good beach too. walk along the path, heading north where there are more spacious areas, hotels and less crowded beaches.
has anyone been to marayoor near munnar? it is one of the cutest towns i have been to in india. there are beautiful small houses, each with it's own individuality and one can walk all around the town and into the countryside with no hassles. there are wildlife reserves around the town, ancient stone ruins and other attractions. i have visited twice.

you are not alone there, with the bad memory
marayoor town is 30-40ks from munnar, i have been reading. i thought it was only 20ks. those journeys through the hills there are beautiful. i love that area, but i wasn't taken with munnar itself. i asked a local for a nicer place to go and he suggested marayoor. that is how i found it.

I just got back from 2 weeks off the beaten path in Kerala
I have a couple of things to add:
- for some odd reason, in rural areas the restaurants are labeled "hotel" in English, even though they aren't hotels.
- homestays are very widely available even (and maybe especially) in rural areas. They can be much much better than hotels, and the food is unbeatable.
- if you go to a restaurant and see "kerala meal" written on the menu GET IT! It is local rice served with a variety of pickles and 2 pitchers of soupy lentils. All you can eat for about 50 rupees.

Heheh; indeed, this is the case in many parts in India, and not just in rural areas.

Yes; "meals" down south is akin to what elsewhere is known as a thali. So indeed, something of an all-you-can-eat little smörgåsbord, greater or smaller.Glad you enjoyed!

Several, mostly clustered around the intersection of the coastal road and the road to the interior. Sorry, none that I can recommend by name, but you won't have any difficulty finding something to nosh on. Thank for all the great informations guys!
We (me and my husband) just received an invite to participate in a film
festival in Thrissur (8th ViBGYOR), next february, and want to spend somes
days after the festival in Kerala.
Coming from Brazil in our first time in India and Asia. Incredible!
