Nehru Boat Race- Accom advice

Hi folks,
We are looking to take in the nehru boat race and also a backwater trip when in Allepey in Aug. We are looking to arrive on Aug8th.

We'd like to know where best to locate ourselves for both? i.e suitable area- and hotel advice with that maybe?
(Allepey hotels/homestays get some conflicting reviews on IM? )

Is it common to have to reserve 3 nights accom at festival times due to demand?

Thanks
Jinj

I stayed at Keraleeyam in 2004. I think there are other lakeside places near there too. It was arranged for me by a friend. You will have the opportunity to see the boats close up and watch the crews preparing them.

He also arranged a ticket for me in the stand to see the races, but I wondered if I might not have been happier in the public seats along the bank.

Anyone taking a tourist or VIP seat in the stand should be aware that it is on an island, and that you can come and go only according to availability of the boats, some of which may be very overcrowded.

The rush for the exit at the end is one of the most frightening events I have ever experienced. There is one small landing, and people do not stop pushing towards it even if no boat is there. Stay at the back of the crowd, or be ready to swim .

HI

You won't go wrong if you stay at the Malayalam Lake Resort, It's an amazing place and situated at the Nehru Trophy Starting Point.

Info under the hotel section.

Hope this helps

I have a feeling that Malayalam may be next-door to Keralayam.

Might try it myself when we go to that area soon.

I am thinking of going in June: then I'll really be able to answer the people who ask what it is like in monsoon!

(No, I am not in any of the Keralayam pictures)

Nick, yes I also think Keraleeyam is next to Malayalam, more
upmarket though. Still would not hesitate staying in Either.
Keraleeyam has also got some pretty nice Looking Chalets little bit further down

In the Background of this Pic I am pretty sure is Keraleeyam.

Picture taken when I was Leaving Malayalam Resort.

Chinadolly, second pic is the same track and little canal(minus
waterlillies) as your pic, except mine is taken from other end
looking back at bridge on road where you get dropped off.

foud it, the address is Nehru Trophy Starting Point
Alappuzha-688 006 Keral.
Hope this helps.

Nick, the Keraleeym resort is situated directly next door with accommadation either side of the Malayalam resort. Its more of an Ayurvedic Centre now.

If staying at the Malayalam you can use the facilities of the Keraleeym resort which include the net and use of restaurant etc.

The Malayalam Resort is by far much better value.

Vandy, Great pic wish i was walking down the canal now!
