Fast and cheap are 2 words that don't go together in India.

Fast = Plane.

Cheap = Train.

cheapest way is train 2class reserved ticket
fastest way is PLAIN,
TRY TO FLY TO ,BANGLORE OR CHENNAI IN A BUDGGET AIRLINE WHICH NEED SOME ADVANCD RESERVATIONS, AND GET A BUS DOWN TO KERALA, AND FROM CHENNAI YOU CAN USE TRAIN TOO.

You may want to check the paramount airline. Direct flight from Delhi to Cochin. Also Air Deccan Via Chennai or Bangalore.

Another option Kingfisher from Delhi to Bangalore and Deccan from Bangalore to Cochin.

That return air fare sounds great to me.

Bangalore - Kerala

Train 6526 departs Bangalore City daily at 21:45, gets to Trichur at 07:50, Ernakulam Town (for Cochin) at 09:35, Kottayam at 10:55, Kayankulam at 12:02, Quilon at 13:10, Varkala at 13:44 and Trivandrum at 14:45.

Bangalore to Ernakulam -

2A (2-tier air con) = Rs 1096
3A (3-tier air con) = Rs 705
SL (Sleeper Class) = Rs 261

Bangalore to Trivandrum -

2A = Rs 1326
3A = Rs 848
SL = Rs 312

Kerala to Bangalore

Train 6525 departs Trivandrum daily at 12:55, Varkala 13:35, Quilon 14:20, Kayankulam 15:02, Kottayam 16:15, Ernakulam Town 17:55, Trichur 19:35 and gets to Bangalore City at 06:55.

The best option is a flight from Delhi to Bangalore in Kingfisher, Deccan or Spicejet.. the rates change in real time.. so take which ever is lower.. and then a Bus from either Majestic(govt bus) or Palayam(pvt buses) to anywhere in Kerala..

Do I need to reserve the train?? How can I do it without a credit card? (I like to make things as difficult as possible!)

You can book the tickets at http://irctc.co.in.
Earlier you had to provide an Indian address for the booked tickets to be couriered to.Now its possible to select the 'e-ticket' option when finalizing your booking and get a printout of the ticket generated online and use that while boarding the train.
In case you find the website a bit confusing and not very intuitive,there are some excellent 'how-to's' on dealing with the common issues in the 'Planes,Trains and Automobiles' subsection of this forum.
