Thank you Rebeccam, for your patience as well. It took me a good twelve days to compile. I made the effort to explore the wonderful Marayur Chinnar region, thanks to whatever I read from other members posts here at IM - ever so useful. Peak XV had kindly identified my unknown weasel at Periyar as a Nilgiri Marten.

Wonderful. I can almost hear the jungly noises and see the butterflies in my Hampshire living room.

It confirms that my next-but-one India trip will have to be to Kerala, and gives me some excellent ideas about where else to go (apart from a backwater cruise).

I don't like the sound of the leeches ...

Were there lots of mosquitos and other biting things? Are those what you mean by "buchees"? (I'm a mosquito magnet - my arms are currently recovering from having served as an all you can eat buffet for Scottish midgies at Loch Tay last week!)

Leeches will only surface when its really moist and damp, such as it was in the latter part of May when we were there. It is not advisable to explore moist evergreen forests in the monsoons. In the dry season, there should not be much of a leech problem.

There were no mosquitos where we went. In this instance, by biting buchees I meant other teeny little flying insects. Actually Im being unfair to the buchees. There were plenty of flying insects, teeny and not so teeny, but none of them actually bit us. It was just the apprehension of them biting us! There are more biting buchees in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai. For these Mumbai buchees, Odomos is more than adequate, I usually keep a small tube in my pocket to re apply whenever needed.

Im honoured that my trip report has been posted in the Articles section, however I must point out that the photo of the Bison there was taken at the Pambar Shola near Kodaikanal last year, and the photo of the Blue Mountains was taken from Dodabetta Peak near Ooty this year. Both these pics are not off or from this trip.

What a great post. Sounds like a terrific trip. Brought back some nice memories and reminded me how much easier it is to explore with the luxury of a car rather than travelling by bus.
