Being a foodie, I love trying all sorts of food everywhere i travel.

Any recomendations for must eat in Kerala ( cochin / fort kochi ) ( vegetarian / egg / fish )

Aviyal, I know is awesome.
Anything apart from Idli / dosa / wada / upma ; suggest something that is keralite must have.

NO 5 STAR STUFF - PLEASE

I am also fond of fresh coconut based curries.

where can i get the best biryanis in cochin / fort cochin?

which is the best reliable place to buy spices & condiments ? is that mattencherry island or something else or any particular shop?

Kerala veg. food is tasty and mostly coconut based. There is always the famous Aapam and stew, iddiyappam, puttu and kadala and much more. A good place to eat in Ernakulam in "Pandhal" on M.G. Road. By no means a budget place and run by the Casino Group. Casino has other places in Cochin and they are all good ...at least were good 5-6 yrs ago. Taj Malabar also has good food.

If you eat fish you have to try the sea food in Kerala. Fantastic indeed. Do not forget to eat Karimeen fry.

A good place to eat Biriyani in cochin is in Mattancherry -- a place named Rehmatulla's. Local's call the place "Kayikka's" and most ppl in Mcherry should know where it is. I am pretty sure they have a veg. or fish one. Can't remember.

Fort Cochin too has some nice places, though I can't remember any names.

To buy spices you should go to Broadway in Ernakulam....There are some Marwari women/men/kids in small shops who have good spices, but may have to bargain a bit. then again, i am sure you speak their language, and that might help.

Pandal was a really good restaurant.Sadly, not only have they downed shutters, the whole building has been demolished.Right opposite to where Pandal used to be,is the Grand Hotel(on M.G Road). For typical Kerala fare, whether its vegetarian, egg or fish dishes, this is one of the place to check out.The Kerala oonu or thali with a side order of fish curry is one of their most popular items on the menu.
As for biriyani's, try the Ceylon Bake House(situated opposite Woodlands' Hotel).Kayikka's mentioned by laughingbuddha above, has opened an outlet in the city( alongside T.D.M Hall). They are mostly known for their mutton biriyani's though.

shacks

They are tasty

You should eat it there

It is neat and clean

But most of them are non vegetarian .

For vegetarian there is a samll place opposite to Aspinwall or in Mattanchery there are lot of good places including Krsihna cafe .

But also heard the presence of typhoid in west cochin , Except from this there is no problem with the food there . Drink only bottled water then everyhting is safe . The shack food is hot then no problem .

Agree with 2 cents

They were doing really well but the spurt in real estate prices starting a few years back made the land much more valueable asset(and an easily disposable one at that)than the returns from the restaurant business.

Best Hygenic & Authentic Traditional Vegetarian Kerala Food

Ambiswamy's Vegetarian Restaurant (Ambi's Dosa) M.G. Road

During our visit to Cochin (Ernakulam), we ate at Ambiswamy’s Vegetarian Restaurant, M. G. Road. This was fast food Indian style. I ate a masala dosa that was very good and crisp. The fare offered included paper dosas, ghee (clarified butter) dosas, onion uttappas, idlis, vadas, chapattis and parotas, all delivered with amazing efficiency and speed.

We also tasted the Mouth watering traditional Kerala lunch next day.. It was very authentic traditional one. Local guy we met there told that it taste like Home made food.

If we want to savour the real Kerala, these small food joints are real place for that.

Tasty, Hygenic and Damn cheap also .. The real Authentic Traditional mouthwatering Kerala vegetarian dishes in a hygenic environment.

Its not like Pai's Dosa.. They have egg dosa and all.. But here its 100% Vegetarian.

Frys Village Restaurant, Chitoor Road South, Ernakulam is very good and used by many locals which is usually a good indication of quality. It has recently been refurbished and is good value for money.

Can someone recommend a clean vegetarian eatery in Trivandrum?

Puttu-Kadala should be on the menu. I wonder what else goes with Puttu.
