Smile Munnar travel

Hi, a whole lot of queries to all you have visted Munnar:

Which is the best time to go to Munnar?
Which would be a relatively tourist free season?
Are hotels expensive?
Which is the closest airport or train staion?
How to reach Munnar from the airport or station?
To go from Kolkata by air or train what would be the best route to take?

Thanks a lot.

best time to visit Munnar would be between Aug and March, but the weather is usually awesome throughout the year.

Munnar is never tourist free, but in the off peak season, you will see many domestic travellers to Munnar.

Hotel rates depends on the season, sorry that I cannot give you an exact rates without knowing your luxury needs I was in a bare basic room without hotwater for 250 Rs. in last november.

The nearest railway station is Aluva and the airport would be Cochin International Terminal (COK)

Hope that helps

Thanks a lot. If it's not choc-a-bloc with tourists that would be good enough. of course, it's not that i am against tourists I too am one, but going from a congested city like Kolkata one would like some peace and quiet for a few days.

Munnar is best post-monsoon. The entire hills are covered with lush green carpets of tea plantations. Its quite a sight to behold!

Which is the best time to go to Munnar?
Anytime other than the rainy season and peak tourist season. Having said that, even in peak tourist season there are plenty of places you can go to that will be yours alone to enjoy. However you will not get discounted rates in hotels during peak season.

Which would be a relatively tourist free season?
Non school vacation period / Monsoons / Winters somewhat

Are hotels expensive?
Hotels, home stays, lodges etc are available at all budget ranges, with discounts offered in off season. Check hotelsinmunnar.net; keralatourism.org and the hotels section here. If you come via Coimbatore, you can stay at Maraiyur for a couple of days before coming further south to Munnar.

Which is the closest airport or train station?

Airport: Cochin Nedumbassery and Coimbatore [via Udumalpet and Marayoor]
Train: Angamaly / Aluva / Ernakulam

How to reach Munnar from the airport or station?
Depends on your budget. Taxi is the most convenient option.

To go from Kolkata by air or train what would be the best route to take?
Again, budget permitting, flight or train to Cochin or Coimbatore and surface transport thereafter.

Would'nt the Darjeeling area be similar to Munnar?

Probably, maybe even more beautiful. Never been to darjeeling in spite of living in Kolkata most of my life. What a shame! The problem is Darjeeling is quite troubled now and one does not know when one will get stranded, at least that's what I hear.

Thank you for your very detailed reply. I have developed a fascination for Munnar from whatever I have seen on the internet.

In 'tourist free' times - services are also shut down??? You don't want a sterile holiday - surely!

I had mentioned 'relatively tourist free' which meant less crowded because I want a quiet holiday which need not necesarily be 'sterile'. And I don't think services are shut down anytime of the year in Munnar. At least haven't heard so.
