Munnar in June

Hi,

I'm planning a trip to Munnar from Mumbai, mid June

I have few questions I hope will be answered-
  • What is a good route to take by train Mumbai-Cochin (Ernakulum) or Mumbai-Coimbatore?
Is there another /better option keeping in mind the bus journey from the train station to Munnar?

  • Is there backpacker's accommodation / hostel / dormitory rooms in Munnar?
We're students on a low budget who don't mind our sleeping bags and would gladly forgo all luxury to extend our stay.

It's monsoon time in Mumbai, too. Unfortunately I only get vacation then (something needs to be done to the Mumbai Uni )
We're a group of four or maybe five. The number hasn't been confirmed yet.
I have another question, though-
  • What is the easiest bus route from Munnar to Kodaikanal?

http://neelakurinji.org/Munnar_Access.htm According to this site there is no direct bus from Munnar to Kodai run by KSRTC, but there are frequent buses from Theni which is en route, and there will be frequent services from Munnar to Theni. Mumbai Cochin by train will be a better option, you can get off at Angamali or Alwaye and take a private taxi or go through to Ernakulam and take a public bus. Check timings of monsoon bus services which may not be that frequent. http://www.indiatransit.com is a useful site. Try http://munnar.com/; http://www.hotelskerala.com/munnar.htm and similar sites for accommodation. You will get monsoon off season discounts in all the hotels. Do a search on this IM site because this topic has been discussed extensively in earlier threads. Good luck.

You can travel from Munar to Udumalaipet (TN) and then from there to Palani (40kms apparox) and from Palani to Kodai (ghat road - 3 1/2 Hrs).

It will be monsoon time in Munnar and Kodai and there may be land slips and closure of ghat roads.

There is a very short route from Munnar to Kodai thro Berijam . But you need some big time influence for forest dept permisssion. It is supposed to be one of the best trekking route but not open to general public. In mosoon time the chances of permission from forest dept is almost nil.

You can also travel from Mumbai to Coimbatore and then to Kodai / Munnar thro' Udumalaipet (Coimbatore - Udumalaipet: 60kms approx)

Thanks for all the advice... I'd love to trek to Kodai, but pulling strings is out of the question, and then there is the monsoon

Buses from Ernakulam to Munnar would start at which Bus Stand?
How would I get there from Ernakulum Jn?

Thanks for the links...very useful

hi,

rajumds post is correct and ideal for munnar to kodai..

from mumbai to munnar,coimbatore-pollachi-udumalpet-munnar is also fine route. it will take around 60+40+80=around 180 kms from coimbatore. for this, cab is best.

if you cross coimbatore to cochin, from coimbatore to cochin you will traval around 180 kms by train and then around 125 kms by bus.so,if you select this route, you will travel extra 125 kms .
