Monsoon at the moment in Kerala

Can someone who is there at the moment or who has just been there tell me what the weather's been like lately, please? According to the All India Weather Report, every day is "fairly widespread showers", other websites say thunderstorms all the time, whereas most people have told me that by mid-August there is much less rainfall than in June/July. What should I believe?? I've never been to India before but my personal experience of monsoon season elsewhere in August has been regular short bouts of rainfall in the afternoon or infrequent heavy rain in the evening. Can I expect more or less the same? Thanks in advance for your input. I'm arriving on Sunday afternoon so any up to date info would be greatly appreciated!

From Cochin

The monsoon rains came back here three days ago after having been mostly absent (or very mild) for some time. Currently it's raining for much of the day. But, that said, it does stop (like yesterday between about 14:30 and sunset). It has been pretty regular heavy rain starting at about 04:00 and continuing then "on and off" until at least afternoon. This is for Cochin only. The rest of Kerala may be quite different. Hope this helps and please note that it may change tomorrow (or today for that matter! )

I was there from June to July, visiting relatives, and those weather reports are not very accurate because they don't have constantly updated information. I remember seeing a site that said 60% showers every day. The monsoons have been much lower than in previous times I've visited, with almost 30% less rainfall than average. Normally, it would be raining almost every day, but we had multiple days without any rain. So, unless an abnormal spike occurs, you will likely have many sunny days. You're right about heavy evening rains. I hope you enjoy your trip!

Thumbs down Let's stop these replies!

The original posting said she would be here on the 12th. Since she hasn't responded to any of our replies, even those which should have reached her before her departure, let's stop wasting our time as surely she's here already!

Calm down, CMS. Just because you got to answer first doesn't mean it's a "waste of time" for others to give their own observations. That's why this site is a forum, not a private messaging service. Other people, even those who haven't joined, may have the same question and may not be in Kerala to find out the actual conditions. Also, I think it was useful to give long-term weather information so that the OP can judge for herself if the current conditions are normal or not for this year.

I resent being told to "calm down", especially by someone apparently as new to posting on this forum as you are! And my comments have nothing to do with "getting to answer first"--what a childish remark. I made my comment as no one else posted any interest except continual posts about the "current weather" wherein the question was a specific one and requested information for the arrival on Sunday the 12th which is long-since passed. The weather has also changed here many times in the past week and they are already here. You will note that the original posting was "Monsoon at the moment in Kerala" (my emphasis). There are other threads here for general weather conditions (in Kerala and elswhere in India)!

Would a calm person use a thumbs down, exclamation points, and a mad smiley face? No, I don't think so. Moreover, just because you have more posts or have been registered here longer (by only a year) does not give you a license to bash Indian Photographer's and my posts. You are not the one to decide if our posts were a "waste of time." We freely gave the advice, even if the OP would never respond. There are always others who are interested in any information they can get. I admit that my sentence about answering first was a jab, but I only chose to write that way because of your patronizing attitude. I apologize for this.

I know that I was frustrated looking at online weather forecasts in Kerala when I was there. I was relieved to see much lower rainfall (over many weeks, not just a few days) over the time of my journey (Kollam, Allapuzha, Ernakulam, and Tamil Nadu). That's why I wrote what I wrote. If you want to expand the conversation or stop posting because it seems like a waste, feel free to do so, but stop trying to force others to follow your lead. I may not be very familiar with this forum, but I think indiamike.com is a place where no one should feel afraid to give their advice for fear of ridicule.

I, for one, appreciate the updates so thanks very much guys.
I'll be there in a couple of months and am trying to get a feel for the monsoonal weather; obviously, I'm not the only one interested.

Having a regular update about the monsoon in Kerala is useful for all travellers going to that region during that period. It is also useful for people like me who are going over the winter period as it gives a indication as to the electrical supply we are likely to experience as most of the electricity supply come from hydro-electric sources so low rainfall equals more power outages.
