| Account closed on user's request | Hello ! There's no such thing as long term rental in India. What happens is that once you find a place you'll be given a contract (normally, at least) and it will state that the term of the rental is for eleven (11) months. This is the norm all over India. It is something to do with avoiding some tax or other - someone other IM'er will put give you the corrrect term for it!!) If the contract is in local lingo, pay a few rupees and get it translated. You may see that it's renewable, or not) As far as renting goes, your best bet is to search on google.com "Real Estate Agents Kerala (substituting Kerala for the city/town you wish to live in or near if you like). Rents in the tourist areas of Kerala are high by Indian standards - because Kerala is a beautiful and popular state to be! You'll be asked for an "advance deposit" which can be expensive, but of course you get it back if the property hasn't been damaged in any way, at the end of the term. You'll also be asked for a fee for the House Broker, Real Estate Agent or whatever - normally about the same amount as a month's rent. When you've paid the deposit etc... you don't have to pay rent for a month - it works the opposite way here - you pay rent for the month you have lived there at the ened of the month. Ask whether you should get the Electricity account put into your name, same for the telephone, if there's one there. Gas accounts can be a problem, but black market gas is fairly easy to get hold of - but is of course more costly. There may be two sources of water - one from the Municipality and one from the bore-well - you pay for the municipality water whether you use it or not. It's supposed to be "drinking water", but the bore well water in my house looks and smells a lot better than the municipality water and I would never even think about drinking THAT!. It would perhaps also be advisable to take the contract, even when translated, to a lawyer, who for a few rupees will let you know that it's all bone fide - and tehrre's no small, irritable print that you didnt see! Good luck with the house/apartment hunting! Shanthi |

Mikkie,so you are planning a 'slightly' longer stay than last time! ![]() Have you searched for properties on rent in sites like 99acres and magicbricks? If you are looking for a place to stay in Kochi, try searching under both 'Ernakulam' and 'Kochi' location options. The rental prices would be mostly for unfurnished apartments. For furnished ones, the rates would be usually higher by atleast 100% Here is the link to a list of semifurnished/furnished apartments available on the website of a leading property developer based in Ernakulam - http://www.abadbuilders.com/homecaredetail.asp?prId=76 The prices quoted appears quite reasonable to me. Edit: Star Homes has furnished apartments located in and around Ernakulam city available on long term rental. Last edited by 2cents; Nov 24th, 2006 at 17:01.. | |
