I sent some photos for posting... they are being approved by the moderator first, I suppose. It may have been the Pallippurathamma festival (Durga, also Bhadrakali locally?), and is also called "Pathamudayam". The Pallipurathu Kavu Bhagavathy temple in Kodimatha is the focus. It is celebrated on April 23rd. Maybe there was a rain delay when I was there on April 24th, or it lasts more than a day. I seem to recall people speaking of marching to a temple. It was early morning, so maybe they were on the way to the temple where there must have been a nice Theeyattu performance that evening... wish I'd known!
But there is also a Vishu festival in Kodimatha, "Malayalam New Year", celebrated on Malayalam Medam 1. But that would be too early for Hindu Vaishakha, "isn't it"? Or maybe they came together in 1996, which is the year I was there. A Spring New Year festival might have more agricultural elements than a Durga festival, though Durga Puja is associated with the Autumn harvest. I hope the photos are approved, as that will make identification easier. Also, there is among them a photo of a shield displayed on an elephant that seems quite unusual (to me, who knows nothing!). It has the same form as a Jewish Star of David - that is, a six-pointed star of 2 interlocking triangles, with a female deity in its center, which could be Durga, though she is more tiger than elephant! |

Camaysar - your post has been validated as you see above, but I am failing to open the link. Can you edit it and adjust the link, or re-post it? I looked at the link thinking there might be something there but couldn't spot it.

Sorry Aishah... of course I will obey. I opened a flickr account just for this post, and I don't quite know how to do it I guess. Never posted photo links before.
Ok, I'll try linking to individual photos, but if these links don't work (I'm pretty sure I followed instructions for linking images) I have these and more Festival photos now in my Member Photo Gallery. Hope this works. Ok, I opened one of the links in another browser and it went to links for all the rest of them as well as the one I clicked on... that is, it went to my "photostream". I must sound like a newbie of newbies! Well, we all start at the beginning... Last edited by camaysar : Oct 11th, 2009 at 12:27. |

Tittooraju, your response proves once again that India is a country of festivals. If a Kerala native is unfamiliar with such a striking event, imagine how many others there are. Most are probably local affairs connected with one of the numerous local temples, each devoted to its deity. If such a festival were to take place in America, throngs of people would come from miles around to see it. In India they don't have to... everyone has his own.
When I traveled in India a festival could break out any time, anywhere - all colorful and exciting events; the Indian people seem to have a special talent for celebration! |

That's quite a feat, as they don't seem to show up here.
I don't know why, Camaysar. You mentioned they're hosted on another site; you could just drop the link to there here.
