Thanks for your reply!
Lakshadweep.nic.in links to lakshadweeptourism.com, but there unfortunately the schedules given are not up-to-date.
How did you book your tours - in Cochi, per internet in advance?

I have not been on a cruise. Normally I travel by boat to Kadmat where we stay and go scuba diving. I have met people on the boat who are part of the SPORTS tour. Because I go diving I book through Lacadives, the dive company. If you do a search on this site for other threads that discuss SPORTS tours around the Lakshadweep Islands you can find someone who went on this trip and ask them how they booked.

I have been late in posting this but I traveled to Lakshdweep in march, through Sports. Highly recommended.Unlike some other govt run agencies, Sports was a welcome change. Great hospitality and very good service.
Visited Kavaratti,Kalpeni and Minicoy. Stayed in ship at night while travelling to next island.

Thanks Araib!
Can you tell me more about your booking, like which tour package did you choose (Coral Reef or Samudram), which ship have you travelled with (M.V Kavaratti, M.V Lakshadweep Sea...), class of accommodation etc.?
Thank you!

Hi Lucky
I chose Coral Reef package.Booked through agent Aspinwall, based in Kochi. That didn't cost me extra and total cost of package was 12k including everything( food, lodging in ship, water sports, food on island). I traveled tourist class which was pretty decent if you are willing to travel with local passengers ( which is definite yes for me). Tourist class offers A/C bunks accommodation. The ship was Arabian sea.

I will try and finish my detailed trip report, in the meantime all the questions welcome.

Happy traveling.

Indians only?

Hello Araib!
I wrote to Aspinwall about our interest in a coral reef or samudram tour and got this answer immediately:
"Kindly note Samudram and Corel Reef packages are available only for Indian nationals.
Foreign nationals get the permits to take Swaing Palms and Marine wealth package only.
The packages and ship schedules for the season starting 1st oct will be publised only by Aug, shall send you the same."

Well the fact that the mentioned tours are for indians only is a bit surprising for me...

Is it really true?

HI Lucky,
Didnt see your location. Yes these are for Indians only. Basically not all islands are open for foreign travelers and those in the packages are unfortunately the ones closed.
I think you can only visit Kadamat and Agatti as of now. Bangaram used to be open but I heard from the caption of the ship that the resort there is closed due to some legal issues and is under govt control.

Bit unusual rules these but Kadamat and Agatti are as good if not better and connectivity is better.

1. I couldn't try any local food. The food is arranged by the organizers and you get the typical North/South Indian stuff (Chappatis, Rice, Dal, Sabzi, Papad etc) both in Ship and in Islands, served as buffett. The local food constitutes rice, fish, meat and poultry.

2. The Lakshadweep waters have some of the best breeds of Tuna fish. I got to know that a canned tin of Tuna (1 Kg) could cost anywhere between Rs.130 to 180, which is expensive in Indian terms. The locals have a traditional way of curing Tuna which preserve it for years. Since I am a strict veggie, this is as far as I can go.

3. The best part of visiting LD is to experience the marine life. The lagoons around the islets have variety of fishes and corals. The organizers arrange for snorkelling. I recommend that if possible, try to get a quality snorkelling gear yourself. This will give an uninterrputed time to watch the underwater life since the ones available with the organizers need to be shared around. I had my own stuff and had a great time!
Warning: Corals are sharp like razor blades. Do not attempt to touch or stand on them. They are living things. You will be bleeding in no time.

4. Make sure that you are fine and fit. Avoid taking elderly people or infants to islands. There is a lot of hiking and climbing to do. The transfer to boats from ship is no easy either. I saw babus taking their whole family trees with them and having hard time. Remember, this is not a pilgrimage!
Tuna only for 130-180!!??G R E A T......I will live on them during my trip to LD.Do they serve tuna on board?
I am a bengali......from Kolkata. The daily fish which we take at home comes at 200-220/kg. And special ones like Hilsa which is a must during monsoon comes at 550-650/kg.
So it will be quite a treat.......
