Kumily to Alleppey plus itinerary advice
Hi, as part of our trip to Kerala in October we'd like to visit Periyar/Kumily then go straight from there one morning to pick up a houseboat from Alleppey for 24 hours. Would this work?
We've considered a couple of itineraries and be grateful for any advice re. routes that work. Option 1 flight into Cochin and travel to Munnar - 2 nights Periyar - 2 nights Houseboat from Alleppey 24 hours Kovalam or Varkala - 6 nights Fort Cochin - 2 nights to catch early morning plane from Cochin Option 2 Fort Cochin - 2 nights Munnar - 2 nights Periyar - 2 nights Houseboat from Alleppey 24 hours Kovalam or varkala - 4 nights Kumarakom - 2 nights, travel to Cochin airport for 10.30am flight thanks! |

I recommend
Fort Cochin - 2 nights Munnar - 2 nights Periyar - 2 nights Kovalam or varkala - 4 nights Houseboat from Thottappally to Alleppey - 24 hours Trichur backwaters - 2 nights. Travel to Cochin airport for 10.30am flight Travelling 5 hours to Munnar on the day of arriving would be too much. |

Hi & Welcome to IM.
Option 2 looks a lot less stressful,Personally I wouldn't bother with Kovalam as you are visiting Varkalha.I would reccomend Kovalam IF your departure point was from Trivandrum, otherwise it's a bit far to travel with the time you have. Not much in Kumarakom, except expensive resorts to laze around in. If you leave early enough from Periyar(Kumily) area say around 7am, you could reach Allepey by 11am which will give you enough time to inspect a few houseboats and depart by Lunchtime. The houseboats usually return by mid morning the following day. If I may suggest to stay a night in Allepey after O'Night Houseboat journey and then Take the tourist Ferry down to Kollam, From Kollam it's a reasonable short journey by Taxi to Varkalha. After Varkalha you can return to Cochin by Train or Car and Spend another night or two in Cochin to wind down before your onward Journey. rgds vandy ![]() |

Hi Clares,
I am wondering if you have found any budget accom in Munnar, Periyar or Alleppey – I am going in December and have been trying to find something that is 700-1400 max for a double room and have had no luck. Thanks! |

Hi Mari, I haven't found anything close to that but only just started looking. a guy has just posted a diary with budget options that may be worth a read - it's the 'very long trip report' from kedgeman. good luck!
