Kumarakkom and Allepey
Kumarakkom and Allepey
Hello Friends,
Heard about Kumarakkom and Allepey as great highlights for a relaxing travel!
Also about the villages that come in between these two sites. But there's almost no info available about the villages on the Net. Can you kindly mention the names of the villages and how they are unique?
Any help will be highly helpful!
Thanks in advance!

There is a lake between the two places!
But you can take advantage of this by doing the trip by boat, and you can book the boat with instructions to include a backwaters tour, seeing life as it is lived on the backwaters.
About the individual villages, I cannot say, but I think that this would, as a whole, give you a unique experience.

The villages depend on the route they choose. In villages, (In Kerala, most villages are suburban areas), you could get a glimpse of life within Kuttanad farmlands. You could see agricultural activities, fishing. Can drink tea from local teashops, toddy from toddy shops etc
But unhighlighted places are more beautiful in Kerala. Alleppey - Kollam 8 hrs boat trip gives you views of more heterogeneous views of villages. From deep and wide lakes to narrower canals.
In both cases you can travel either by cheaper State boats or in hired boats.
Whatever be it, This is not the right time as monsoon reaches the state with in 1 or 2 days.
A South Coastal Kerala tour as a whole, from Cochin - Alleppey - Kollam - Varkala - Kovalam - KanyaKumari (TN) will be cute. May take 5 days. But September is better.

Dear Friend,
Warm welcome to Kerala...God's Own Country.
Alleppey & Kumarakom are two shores of Vembanattu Back water, the largest backwater in Kerala. Both are villages. Alleppey have a beautiful beach. You can stay in house boat for overnight cruise in Alleppey and can take hotel stay in Kumarakom.

Hi Robs, The destination of Kumarakom is a Village panchayath in Kottayam district and most of the resorts are by the banks of Vembanad lake , second biggest lake in India
Alleppey is the name of the district and the tourist are is a municipality and most houseboats are based here and few resorts
Kumarakom is the eastern side of the Vembanad lake and Alleppey is to the western side of the lake
The villages/ panchayaths that you will pass when you take a backwater cruise in the Alleppey side of the backwaters is Kainakary, pulincunnu , champakulam
if you do it in Kumarakomside of the backwaters then yoy pass through areas of Kumarakom and Aymanam
Just got back 2 weeks ago from 52 days in India and definitely Alleppey was one of the highlights of my trip, so much that I left twice (to pursue my trip) and came back... Ended up staying 2 weeks there during monsoon and have no regrets! The village is beautiful, there are lots of streets to walk in that are incredibly charming, people are VERY nice (and I traveled as a single woman through India which isn't always easy...), the backwaters are incredible: culture shock and great memories!!...
The food is great, prices are much cheaper than in Cochin, my homestay was clean, in a beautiful house with a young manager who did everything to make my stay amazing!
If you can, try Paradise Inn and enjoy Lineesh kindness, he will help you find everything you need at the best price and will even go with you to ensure you get local prices at times, I was spoiled =D
In Alleppey, you can walk, bike, rent a scooter and find local desert beaches, get on a canoe for a few hours in the backwaters (a MUST!!) and get lost around (people are adorable and love to help)!! From Kumarakom, take the government boat (there is one even if some tell you know, just insist), it's 5 rupees to go to the other side of the lake, then get off, walk straight in the little street that makes you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere and get in the bus to Alleppey... Awesome and so cheap!!
In Alleppey, also try their egg puffs in a bakery and for a drink in the evening, rent a scooter and go to the beach, there is a little restaurant covered with palm branches, their shahi paneer is delicious and cost only 110 rupees.
Enjoy =D
