Kozikode (the first litter free city in India)

I found this article on the net.

Kozikode (the first litter free city in India)

"Together, the 730-odd trained women belonging to local self-help collectives now handle some 300 tonnes of city wastes, over the 83 square kilometres that this small city straddles. They are organised into 73 different units of ten women each. The city corporation gives each unit a grant of Rs 1.25 lakh and helps get an equal amount as bank loans, to buy two autorickshaws. Almost all of them are the unemployed from poorer city homes.

It?s not a free service. Each home must pay them a service charge of up to Rs 30 each month. Shops, hotels and offices pay more."

Has anyone visited Kozikode recently, is it truely litter free?

I too am from around Calicut though i get to visit there only once or twice a year...

Its a smallish city, around 800,000 population i guess. Like almoraboy mentioned, this is where the whole come-in-ships-and-colonize thing got started by Gama.

Calicut is a coastal town 200 km north of Cochin. It is some sort of a base point for Wayanad - Kalpetta in Wayanad is around 2 hours from Calicut.

Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calicut

This place is near Calicut too: http://www.kadavuresorts.com . Never been there myself, passed by it a number of times. So I cant give any feedback on the place.

Calicut Airport has a number of flights from Middle East, Mumbai and Chennai , and is around 25 Km from the city.

Local specialities : Banana chips and Halwa. and Biriyani too..

As for litter-free city, i won't believe it until i see it myself..

yup, kadavu is a nice resort on the way to the international airport at calicut.
it is pretty cheap and u get almost 5 star facilities. swimming pool, etc.
the buffet is for 210 or 220 bucks per person, eat as much as u like, veg or non veg. a person will be singing live while u have ur dinner. located next to a backwater.
then u can also go to the taj malabar in claicut. other places to eat are mezbaan, fortune, hyson and al-bake (on mavoor road). the biryani in chttp://www.indiamike.com/india/images/smilies/original.gif
alicut is absolutely yummy. i have been here for 1.5 yrs and .5 more years to go .. so gonna enjoy to the max

nearby places to see are mahe beach, kappad beach and tushargiri. then not so nearby places are wayanad, ooty, kodaikanal/munnar, etc.

will be going to wayanad on friday (most prolly). will post the link to the pics sometimes next week.

enjoy......

mezbaan is on mavoor road itself.
when u r approaching it from baby memorial, al bake is on the right hand side.
keep going straight, there will be a hotel on the left hand side. mezbaan is behind that hotel.
