Question Kovalam hotel/spas- suggestions?

Hello. I'm going to India for first time in July. Travel will mainly be in the South, Tamil Nadu, Kerala & Goa.
I have heard the beach area at Kovalam is fantastic. While there I'm hoping to indulge a little and stay at an Ayurveda spa (or at least recieve treatments somewhere). I've found info on Somatheeram. Has anyone visted this spa, or have any recomendations for places to stay in Kovalam? I'm a bit budget minded, but don't mind a couple days of mid-range expense.
Thanks!!

july?

click here for a hotel reccomendation in kovolam

however, there is no beach in july, the monsoon all but washes the beach away and virtualy all of the kovalam tourist places will be closed down.

July in Kerala

Oh no! I wasn't aware of that. Unfortunatly July is the only month I can go. What would you recomend a person to do In Kerela in the month of July if the beaches are washed out. Is it a good time to explore the back-waters, or nature park?

Thanks!

Hello there
Getting back to 'indiamike' after a long break.
As I live in Trivandrum , maybe I could help you out here.
As Steven says the monsoons are in and the beach will be practically non existant
The monsoons begins in real ernest in June continues on through July and tapers down in August/Sept
However the last couple of years the monsoons have been playing very truant and looks like might continue to do so this year. We have been waiting for the rains for the last 3 weeks and we are yet to see a decent fall. Panic is setting in the Govnt. circles and power cuts have been announced yesterday as water in reservoirs are dwindling. So far no joy on the monsoon front.

Still even if it pours there are many things to enjoy in Kerala - cruising the backwaters, trekking the hill stations, visiting the wildlife sanctuaries, practising some yoga and experiencing ayurvedic treatments and massages, checking out the arts and culture Oh yes there's a lot to do in Kerala.
I noticed you mentioned Somatheeram - its quite popular among the international tourist but frightfully expensive. I would suggest you contact the ex chief ayurvedic physician of Somatheeram ( I forget his name right now. will get his contact number if you require) who has his own clinic near Somatheeram and stay in one of the nearby Hotels/resorts for about $10-20 per day Somatheeram going to set you back $100 per day!! If you are in for some treatment suggest you try the good doctor If you are in for some massages there are many good masseuse who do a decent job. Drop a line if you need any help etc
Oh yes there is a n ayurvedic spa by the backwaters where you could enjoy your ayurvedic treatment
Cheers

I'd love to know your doctor's name/contact info. I'm planning a trip to Kerala as well and would like to see a well recommended ayurvedic doctor who has his own clinic instead of checking into a spa type hotel.

Hi there
So sorry I missed your mail or would have replied much sooner.
His name is Dr. Franklin (an elderly gentleman) and he could be contacted at franklinpanchakarmaclinic@yaho o.co.in
I believe he is away on a lecture tour to Germany at present but still you could get in touch.
He has two clinics - one near Somatheeram and the other in Kovalam Suggest the one in Kovalam as easier access and availibility of rooms at beach unlike the other.
Hope the above info is of help Need more give a shout
Cheers
