Kochi - Great Destination
Earlier this month I made a trip down 2 kochi , which one of India’s prime tourist destinations and was fascinated by the beauty and allure of the region. I do hope everyone of you get a chance to visit this extremely fascinating and inviting destination. I always had something to do, whether it was sightseeing, going boating or spending hours at some of Kochi’s fine eateries and antique shops(be sure to bargain). But the activity I’d recommend the most would be the back water tours which are so soothing and visually stimulating. I stayed at a beautiful property on the beach called “The Old Lighthouse Bristow Hotel” and was very pleased with my stay there. The place is great for all of you who are willing to spend that little extra for a classy experience. I spent hours by the pool, working on my tan, fell in love with the Ayurvedic and Balinese treatments at their spa, relished their food and thoroughly enjoyed my morning coffee at their outdoor lounge. Try Kochi out for yourself and maybe check out the hotel as well, look forward to seeing your posts soon…. Cheers!

First up, the serious backwaters are some way from Kochi; the hub towns are Alleppey and Kollam. Second, there are 350-400 boats at Alleppey, many are power boats, so gridlock threatens anyone wanting to see this rapidly deterioriating 'attraction' in season. Third, you sound like you are new to India, and wanting more of a 'lounge around' holiday at a resort place.
Nothing wrong with any of that, but it is not for many travellers is all! Having seen Fort Cochin a few times now, over 20 years or so, I am shocked at how crass and commercial it has become...and the backwaters are being rapidly destroyed, having lost a huge proportion of the waterways. Untrammelled and unregulated tourism, and global warming are the major culprits here. Note also that the corrupt officials in Ernakulam/Kochi *do not have a landfill* so people just throw trash out in the street. And how about that garbage and pollution strewn airport to Kochi taxi ride and the massive traffic problems - wow. Also, people in Kochi just burn the piles of garbage every day, adding acrid smoke pollution to the humid, heavy salt air. One wonders how gormless tourists can miss these things or if they live in permanent self-delusion...no offence mate, but open your eyes occasionally. In case you doubt my word, I write from an internet bar above the main street of Kochi right now. Have to agree re the food - just wonderful...but I need more than that for a good time - I want old Kochi back please, minus the auto-rickshaw pests, crazy drivers honking horns at all and sundry in the few tourist streets, the mad bus drivers and hand out mentality of the locals. The sea is oil polluted from the massive shipping into the port, even the papers are reporting these things now. Ayurveda is all over in Sth India. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but you need to face facts. |
