Not sure how the technology works. We were told by the boat men that this technology should be used in all toilets for giving license to a houe boat. Could not find anything on google though about how it works.

That possibility wandered across my mind too. In fact, it was waving a big flag.

The usual technology for boats that don't pump overboard is holding tanks.

Despite the fact that houseboats seem to breed like flies, I'd guess that they carry but a small proportion of the excreting humans that are either afloat on, or living by (with no other alternative) Kerala's backwaters and lakes.

Isn't the above just an allusion if overly fanciful to septic tanks, or the variety thereof boats may commonly carry? (Perhaps Nick's holding tanks? --> Though with waste collection in India, honestly I often wonder next: Where does one dispose of it? Or who will do so, or for you?)
