Kerala

Namaste:
I am new to this forum and have enjoyed reading messages about India travel. We live in USA and will visit Kerala around end of Feb for about 8-10 days. Can anyone suggest a good arrival airport to begin our trip? We would like to merge backwater, beaches, and other interesting scenic areas if possible. Any suggestions to get us started will be greatly appreciated.
Shukria

The airport with the most flights is Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), which is as good a place as any to start. Kovalam beach is nearby. The backwaters are more to the north and inland, but it is pleasant to travel through Kerala by car or train and the state isn't very big.

Calicut and Cochin have airports, too. Landing in Cochin would put you right in the middle of the state.

I would just try to get the most direct or cheapest flight. You'll enjoy whichever part of Kerala you land in.

from Chicago, you'll get the best deals to Mumbai, then you can go to Kerala by air or train.

See my thread Kerala Backwaters - A cruise on budgets! for various backwaters options.

Generally the kerala climate is not as hot as the average north India. But it is a thin long strip of land along the Arabian Sea cost as the western border. The east is the mountain ranges running from north of the state to the south. The state is bout 70km wide. This makes the climate more humid.
Nov, December, January, Feb are ‘cold’
March, April, May are hot
Monsoon starts on June. Its fantastic if you are a rain and ‘mud’ lover.
August-September is the state festival season.
The snake boat race is an attraction - Alleppy & near Pattanamthitta (spell check)
There are a number of temples festal with parade of number (I think about 100!) of decorated elephants.
Kerala is a peaceful place for leisure tourism.

The last time I flew to Trivandrum, I had to stay in a hotel in Mumbai before catching my flight to Kerala....This time around I will be flying through Kuwait because the layover is shorter and the flight arrives to Trivandrum in the morning as opposed to in the middle of the night.

I had contemplated traveling through Singapore also, but the flight would have arrived to Trivandrum in the middle of the night, which would have required me to stay in a hotel in Trivandrum before moving on to my destination.

My travel agent specializes in flights to Kerala. If you'd like his phone number, just let me know and I'd be more than happy to forward his info to you.

Thanks for great ideas. We would appreciate the phone number of your travel agent if it is no trouble. I have seen beautiful photos of Kerala and heard great stories so we are really looking forward to a great trip. Are the mosquitos really bad there especially in backwater areas? What type of clothing do you recommend? Thanks

Hi,
The climate is quite moderate. You can wear any normal outfit. Its neither too cold nor too hot. I would say, fly to Trivandrum or Cochin Air Port. You can get travel arrangemnets made from here to almost anywhere. I hail from Trivandrum and work in Bangalore.
I can help you out in any of these two places. My email : varun_dreams@rediffmail.com
Happy Journey...
