LD, I never got around to thanking you for your detailed replies. So -- thanks, it's not every member who takes as much time.

Sounds like a most interesting group indeed. Funny how something like sports may unite some widely divergent people eh (and how apparently this sends you guys across the world).

Cheers, do keep us posted of what you find.

Mixed Martial Arts Information

Here is another martial arts aside. Supposedly the first ever mega kickboxing event and featuring world title kickboxing bouts sanctioned by the WKL was organised by the All India Kickboxing Council and held on 29th Feb 2004. I believe that Ziauddin Khatib won the 70 kg world title fight against Farhad Kiani of Iran.

I found a link to one of the training centers. Here is information from their site:

On the outskirts of a small town called Devlali in Maharashtra India exists a hardcore mixed martial arts training center called Tigers Gym. This gym trains manages and promotes professional fighters who compete at International Professional events in the disciplines of Kickboxing, Thaiboxing and MMA. Tigers Gym in Nasik India is part the massive Balkawde Wrestling Academy located in South Devlali the grape producing region of western India. Devlali is just 4 hours by train or road from the metropolitan city of Bombay. Its not usually possible to locate Devlali on the Map of India but you can look for "Nasik" city which is just 10 kms from devlali. All fighters are above the age of 18. At Tigers Gym the fighters cross train in kickboxing, mauy thai, judo, wrestling, ju jitsu, weight training and aerobic exercises. The workouts last for 2 sessions everyday 6am to 9m and then 4pm to 6pm under the direction of their coach Daniel Isaac. Training in Wrestling, Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing and MMA is imparted all year round.

Way of the Warrior - Kalari, the Indian Way

An eight part series documentary on the Martial Arts of south and south east Asia, originally broadcast on the BBC in the early 1980s. This episode showcases both the Southern and Norther styles of Kalaripayit, an ancient form of martial arts from India and is probably the mother form of all martial arts.

Warrior Ascetics

For years I have been researching martial monastic orders such as the Buddhist and Taoist orders of China, monk armies of Nara and Mount Hiei in Japan and the Templer, Hospitler and Teutonic orders of Europe. It was with great excitement that I discovered a recent publication by Wesleyan University Associate Professor of History, William R. Pinch, entitled Warrior Ascetics and Indian Empires (Cambridge Studies in Indian History and Society).

The blurb reads, "Many people assume, largely because of Gandhi's legacy, that Hinduism is a religion of non-violence. William R. Pinch shows just how wrong this assumption is. Using the life of Anupgiri Gosain, (alias Himmat Bahadur, was a Saiva ascetic warrior and warlord) a Hindu ascetic who lived at the end of the eighteenth century, he demonstrates that Hindu warrior ascetics were an important component of the South Asian military labor market in the medieval and early modern Indian past, and crucial to the rise of British imperialism. Today, they occupy a prominent place in modern Indian imaginations, ironically as romantic defenders of a Hindu India against foreign invasion, even though they are almost totally absent from Indian history. William R. Pinch's innovative and gloriously composed book sets out to piece together the story of the rise and demise of warrior asceticism in India from the 1500s to the present. It will appeal to students of religion and historians of empire."

Dear Lambdragon,

If you want to organize a trip to Kerala with expert martial artists, you should consider the following. There are many different kalaris, and among them is the CVN group (Dr. Zarrilli is their student) by far the biggest and wide-spread. But Dr. Zarrilli is a theater man, and CVN is specialized in giving martial art demonstrations. Emphasis is on the show and the theatrical aspect, which do very well. If you want to learn the kalarippayattu for fighting perposes, I suggest you should look somewhere else. However, if you want to contact old masters you have a problem, because most of them do not speak English. If you like I can bring you into contact with an English speaking teacher, who also still has a very good contact with his own teachers (the 'old guys'), who are visiting his kalari frequently. The kalari is not in the Karnakulum district, but on a 5 hour during train journey. Or, alternatively, you can fly from Mumbai to another airport, which is 2.5 hours from the kalari. If I ask, they will pick you up.

Did you manage to find interesting classes, Lambdadragon?

Hello Lambdadragon
I am very interested to hear whether you managed to successfully find martial art classes in the Cochi area?
Where do you prepare to go practicing martial arts?
I noticed that you will be travelling in Kerala in February 2008 - I will be there myself in February/March, together with my 2 kids.
My son loves aikido more than anything else in the world, and I expect him to have severe abstinencies ...

Best regards,
Agata

Hello folks, sorry I was not monitoring this thread recently and was unaware of the questions that had been raised to me.

Thank you haritha for posting your link. I am not the only one interested in visiting a kalari, so I welcome everyone to feel free to post such contact information.

Also thanks to Kalari for his very kind and generous offer to help us make "contact with an English speaking teacher". Our itinerary has not yet been finalized, so I am not able to clearly define our trip plans yet. Regarding your question about whether our party is interested in entertainment or true martial abilities, I can answer that all of our members are seasoned martial artists. One from our group is one of the highest ranked women in Aikido. My eldest son (who is Chinese) was twice champion in his weight class in full-contact kungfu.

The three main areas we were considering travelling to are New Dehli, Mumbai, and Laksawadeep. On our way to Laksawadeep we were going to spend a night in Kochi and were considering visiting the ENS Kalari in Nettoor outside Kochi as sirensongs had suggested in an earlier post. However, I received information from the resort at Bangaram that the scuba certification course is a minimum of six days on their island and over USD 400 per night would make that portion of our trip far too costly and too long a stay than the three days we had budgeted for in time. Thus I am sad to say, we are likely to drop our plans for Laksawadeep and Kochi altogether. We are also looking at the Andaman Islands for a scuba trip, but that is only in the exploratory phase at this time.

Living and teaching in Mumbai is a high ranked Aikido instructor that used to live in the US. We will be training with him at his dojo there. Another Aikido dojo in New Dehli has also invited us to train with them while we are in their city.

It is still my hope that we would be able to observe Kalaripayattu while we are in India, but it is not likely that we would be able to deviate from a very tight itinerary once it has been finalized.

Regards, David
