Kerala in October
Hi
Planning on going to Kerala in October 9-25th. Is it going to be too rainy? Or is the rain more like an hour each day or is it constant? K |

Rains shouldn't be that bad in october since Kerala typically receives rains from the south-west monsoons in june-september. (Having said that, the monsoons have been weak so far and hence either might not be a threat at all or might be a delayed one this time).

Thanks Sharan, I hope it's the former!
At the moment we are spending 2 days http://www.hinterlaand.com/?, 2 days in Fort Kochi then on to Allepey for a few days, Periyar for a few days and Varkala and back to Kochi, is there anywhere else you would recommend going? We've got a week at the end... |

Hi Kathy Mac,
one place that i would recommend for a weekend trip to truely relax is Kumarakom. It is about 1 hour drive south of Cochin. It is not a commerical as other backwater villages, but they have there fair share of resorts, not too many tourists. It is quiet and clean. In Alleppy I stated at the Keraleeyam. It is supposed to be one of the best ayurvedic resorts in Alleppey. It is right on the backwaters. The place is quite simple and the staff is very accommodating. http://www.keraleeyam.com/ if you are interested in local shopping i would recommend MG Road in Ernakulam. I hope this helps. if you have anymore questions, feel free to contact me! |

a little more info:
to be quite honest with you I would not bother going on a backwater tour for days. They cost about Rs10,000/per day and it is not worth it - meaning, after a few hours you will get bored. I went with about 10 friends for the afternoon and we were bored after a few hours. Definitely go for a few hours. the view is divine and the ambience is most relaxing. Your boat operator will offer to stop along the side you they will cook/grill a fresh fish for you. It is clean and hygenic, most importantly, tasty!! if you have time you can also go to Kovalam, south of Trivandrum. they have many large resorts and it is right on the beach. But it is not like Goa, so do not bother packing a swimsuit if you need additional information, always feel free to contact me!! |

Kovalam is O.K. for swimming but you should be aware that there can be strong currents and undertow at times.

I should clarify - as a woman I would not want to stroll along the beach in Kerala in a two-piece or topless. Kerala is a very conservative society

You can swim in Kovalam and Varkala wearing a bikini. Just stay at that part of the beach where all the foreigners are, so you wouldn't be the only one and attract all the stares. Most probably you will still get some, but that's life.
Don't do it at a lonely beach. |
