Hello everyone,

I am planning to visit Kerala in march last week. I read on various forums that it will be very hot that time and not the best time to visit. I understand beaches will not be good to visit but does it hold true for places like Thekkady or Periyar National Park too ? Apart from Munnar is there any other place I can hope to enjoy during that time.

My plan is to fly till Kochi and then travel further from there and I have 5 complete days in hand which I can extend to 7 if absolutely required. Unfortunately I can't travel before these dates.

What is your suggestion. Should I completely skip Kerala and look for other places. Flying to north india for 5 days doesn't seem to be an intelligent option as well. e.g. Return flights to Himachal Pradesh are in 15-20 k range.

Sorry for the broader question but any advice would help.

Makrand, when it comes to climate, it is absolutely true to say it's all relative.

So we need to know what you are used to. Are you a native of Hyderabad? You will find Kerala in March to be hotter and much more humid. Having visited Kerala from London in March, and enjoyed it thoroughly, I think it is nothing you can't handle, including beaches. Frankly, if you really hate humidity, you won't like Kerala at any time of the year!

The hill places will be comfortably cool.

I used to visit Kerala in March/early-April. I had grown used to the heat, and took advantage of hotel-price high season being over.

That was from London. Now, if I go there from Chennai, the local people are saying oh-my-god-the-heat, and I'm saying, what heat?

Yes, it will be really hot in Kerala during march end. But comparing to April & May, it will be less.

You can visit munnar, wagamon & thekkady which will be comparatively cooler.

Also try to spent one day/night on house boats of alleppey or kumarakom backwaters.

A couple of points to consider:

The worst drought of a century is looming over the state. The hopes are pinned on good summer rains though.

There might not be boating in Thekkady. There were reports of suspending boating even back in October as the water level in the reservoir was too low. There were reports of larger boats being withdrawn from service. Don't know the status now though.

Thank you all for your responses and apologies for delay from my end. I was planning to stick to hilly areas like Munnar and Thekkady and may be one day for houseboats. Thank you for information about drought. I wasn't aware about that. Probably will require some research to know about current status.

@Nick, I am staying in Hyderabad from past 8 years and I consider it to be very hot in summer. I guess that can give my frame of reference . I understand the coastal areas will always be humid but if hilly areas are ok then I can go ahead.
