Kerala for 2weeks in february

hello,

i will spend my first trip to india with my girlfriend in february 09.

our plan at the moment:

12.Feb. arriving in mumbai at night
12. Feb. drive to nashik (visit friends)
14.Feb. train from nashik to calicut
15. Feb. arriving in calicut in the morning,go to kappad beach
16. Feb. relax
17. Feb. go to kalpetta by bus, banasura project, pookot lake
18. Feb climbing chembra peak(a difficult trek?)
19. Feb Muthanga NP, waterfalls,
20. Feb. drive back to calicut + further to Alleppey by bus
(or is it too stressful?)
21. Feb. 3hour backwater tour, accomodation in the backwaters
22. Feb. relax, beach
23. Feb. relax, beach
24. Feb. back to calicut, kappad beach
25. Feb. relax
26. Feb. train back to nashik

1. what do you think about our plans? is it too much or shall we
add some more destinations? end and beginning are fixed.
then we will stay for some month in nashik and afterwards do
a more cultural trip in the varanasi direction

2. do you have some recommendations for nice and not to
expensive (we are students) accomodations/homestays?

3. do we have to pre-book the accomodations for this time of
travel?

4. is there any alternative to the kappad beach resort?
or shall we choose an accomodation in calicut and go there by
a riksha? or is there another better beach on our route with
cheaper rooms than the ones of the kappad beach resort?

5. is it sufficient to book our trains from nashik to calicut
and back when we arrive in nashik?is 2. AC the right choice
for this long drive?
6. where can we get the permit for the muthanga np?
7. do you have any eperiences with visiting the banasura
project?

thank you very much for your help

carmen and stefan

Yes - 6 hours. Go by train

Haven't hear of this. Or do you mean the Banasura project?

Book early. 3AC is also OK, since you are 'budget' travellers

Perhaps you should include Verkala beach in your trip, and also spend some time in Fort Kochi on the way.

thank you for your suggestion.

what do you think, what part of the trip should we reduce to visit these spots?

Instead of spending too much time north of Kerala, you could do more of the south basing yourself in kochi. You could add Munnar to your trip, since it mostly consists of beaches (for a variety) Gutten Tag!

I'm not sure I'd do two stays at Kappad beach. Perhaps just come back to Calicut from South and then straight on to Nashik.

Plus, if it were me I'd want more than 1 night in backwaters and I'd want to include Fort Kochi.

As far as I know, the only place to stay at Kappad Beach is the Kappad Beach Resort. It's comfortable, but not budget.

Whatever you decide, enjoy your first trip to India.

thank you very much for your good suggestions.

what do you think about this plan:

12.-19.Feb. like our old plan
20. only drive to fort cochin
21. visit the city (train or bus?)
22. drive to alleppey (train or bus), backwaters accomodation
23. backwaters, backwaters accomodation
24. allepey beach (or shall we drive on north - any better
beach?)
25. further to kannur (is it worth a visit, any other
recommendation?)
26. back to nashik

i think munnar is to far away from our main route and we already visited wayanad. if we would add munnar, i would be a worried, that the trip will be a little bit stressful.
what do you think?

we are open-minded for a general new route.

thank you very much for your lovely help

This looks much better to me!

The beach at Kannur is beautiful - very quiet and unspoilt - but in my opinion the only reason to go there in addition to the other beaches you plan on visiting would be if you were using it as a base to see theyyam.

If you do go there, Kannur Beach House is in a superb location, although i havenot stayed there so not sure how good the accom is.

thank you very much.

now something completely new:

do you think it would be possible to do a route like
nashik(14.2.)-allapuzha-wayanad-hampi-nashik(27.2.)
without having to much stress.

or would you say that hampi is not worth the stress?

Haven't visited Hampi yet, but plan to later this month. If you are in any doubt about whether it's worth going take a look at the sticky thread on Hampi in the Karnataka forum or go to www.hampi.in Beach's wonderful descriptions have convinced us!!!

Sorry, can't help you with the route, although others will be able to. If you don't get any responses you may need to repost - this is in the Kerala forum rather than the itinerary one and some people may miss it.

i think adding hampi is a little bit too much stress.

is there any interessting spot between the railway-line between alleppey and nashik? perhaps a nice city with temples(like hampi) or something in this direction. i'm not sure if kannur is the right place to do some cultural activities (i don't mean meeting people- that's what we plan for the whole time). i hope you understand what i mean.

then our trip would contain these elements:
- beach, relax
- nature, animals
- trekking
- sightseeing,culture(buildings, ...)

Yes, it may be too much stress.

If you plan on coming back again, you can save Hampi for another time - we spend our lives compromising on our India trips and promising oursleves 'next time'!

If you do plan on doing it, maybe you should think of doing an overnight train back to Bangalore rather than an evening drive?
