kannur Kannur kannur
the land of political violence ,
and the great devotional art of theyyam is performed there, ,nov- march
people are different and very natural. a lot of villages ,Thalssery have a nice marcket and very old too, the famous Dinesh beedi factories,
you can visit soem old houses, to see the kerala style of architecture,
payambalam beach , papinissery snake farm, Bekal fort (it is in the next dist) parassinikadavu temple where people offer fish and toddy(a type of alcohol) to the god .
you can go to the nearby places if you have time , Mysore is just 180KM ,
Nilamboor in Mallapuram dist .
may be a lot more than a conventional tourisum circuit .
A big world and small people

Dont let the political violence take you back. Apart from the political violence, in which you have nothing to fear (for only hardcore party workers are targeted !!!) the people are very freindly and helpful.

What sort of info are you looking for ? I am thinking of heading to Kannur sometime early November. So based on specific questions, you shall have answers too

thanks for the replies so far........
Not too worried about the political violence, this is the first that I have heard of it. Guess that I am just trying to get a feel for the city, not much info out there. Sounds like not may people stop there. Interesested in a goo dplace to stay/good area for when I get there. I will be studying ayurveda there starting in Nov.
thanks again

Good hotels are clustered around the city center. Then the flip side would be travelling to your studying place everyday and back - Kannur busses can be scarier than rollercoaster rides but safe all the same.. You will get a hang of it once you are there for a few weeks. Mentally it helps to be in the bus, rather than in an auto and see those monster busses coming towards you and veering away a few inches before touching the auto

Other option is for you to get a place near your Ayurveda training center where you can stay at standalone house or as a paying guest in one of the progressive houses around. Your ayurveda center should be able to arrange one quite soon. In worst case you can send me a PM and I can help to sort it out. I have a locked house in Kannur!

If anyone knows of any quality and affordable ayurvedic massage/body work institutions in the south please let me know. Even being surprised all the time b4 I am there again

Taj Residency, Calicut

Hello there,

In the North of Kerala, the Taj Residency Hotel in the district of Calicut(Kozhikode) is quite famous for its Ayurvedic treatment and facilities(Around 100 kms south from the district of Kannur). People from all over India including celebrities have been flocking to this place on a regular basis, so I suppose it is quite something. I dont think they offer teaching the science, however, they could be a good source of info for you, and a good place to get some treatment perhaps?

Sorry to hear that, Iguana, though there are far worse places in the world to suddenly find yourself having nothing to do for 3 weeks!

Change the thread title or start a new thread with subject like "Soliciting experiences on Ayurveda teaching in Kerala - Three weeks"

That should give you some responses. Not many (who can help) would open a Kannur Info thread to give you this advice

your question need to be more specific , what you want to learn , there is a lot of organisations to learn ayurveda, and ayurvedic massage,
if you are looking for 2-3 weeks crash course on ayurvedic massage you can find many places in trivandrum, but this is just giving introductory courses and some training ,
i can reccoment you few things

1, basic principles of ayurveda
2, Ayurvedic food and lifestyle
3, Knowldge about essential herbs (50-100)
4,learn the different types of ayurvedic massage,
5,practice(train) few which you can do within your limits
