italian(?)surnames in Wayanad

Question italian(?)surnames in Wayanad

does someone know why in Wayanad district many people have surnames like italian people?I don't remember exactly,it was like Vermicelli or something similar..

Portuguese influences? Just a guess.

ps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Kerala Would seem to support this; no mention of Italians, I think, but there may of course have been a few.
