Hello Jones and welcome to indiamike.com
I would strongly advise you not to use asiarooms.com
3 friends have used their website, one cancelled his holiday and couldn't get a refund from asiarooms, despite cancelling months in advance.
Another turned up at her hotel to find there was no booking made and no rooms available.
The third arrived at his hotel and found it was a very low budget hotel, even though he was led to believe that it was a great hotel and he's paid Rs1600 for the room for the night, he was so annoyed with the rooms offered that he went to find another hotel.
He complained to asiarooms, but they never even replied to his e-mail.

We did Kerala over X-mas two years ago and were able to get hotels without booking ahead.Take a look at our journal for suggestions on Kerala and good accomodation in Cochin.
Only if you need to book a hotel becuase you're arriving in the middle of the night, then book ahead and deal directly with the hotel. See the recoomendations on Indiamike in the hotelsection.

I've used asiarooms.com twice, one in Hong Kong and once in Kochi, both times without any problem. Mind you I didn't need to do cancellations or anything.

Kerala is a reasonably good and safe place to travel .
If you dig this site you will get info on Kerala .
Also try to read the Roughgudie to south india to Kerala a minimum understanding of Kerala .
Longer journeys in Kerala South to North or North to south trains are good.
Also lot of homestays and small guest houses are opened in kerala which the guide books are not able to tell all about them
Visit the kerala tourism website www.keralatourism.org
Also it is nice to book places directly as the most of the places , people run it are gentle, talk in english and write replies to your emails.
Happy travel in Kerala

we have been to kovalam kerala many times, and allthough the lighthouse beach is poular we prefer to stay at a good hotel on another beach, as it has a beach/sea view its a little more expensive than some, l know that some hotels are as little as 800/- per night but l would expect to pay two or three times that with a pool, and its a bit more where we stay. one to avoid is the Swarxxxxx ( best not say its full name) a very rude manager but kind staff and a very poor beakfast room/ dinning room even the simplest order can take an eternaty, but if you get one of the newer rooms its everdently not so bad, be prepared for lots of steps down to the pool and up to the higher level rooms.if you get all curried out try Mollies near Samudra beach they even do a Sunday lunch but very popular so book your table.also try the leela 5* hotel buffet at around 700/- ish you need to be hungry great food but only go if your tank is empty as there is a lot to chooes from.
