How long for a houseboat cruise?
My husband and I are spending three weeks in Kerala in February and I've always wanted to do a houseboat cruise - a really nice one with a bathroom - I am not sure whether to do a two night cruise or just a one night cruise. Is there enough to see (and not get bored) on a two night cruise from Kumarakom to Allepey? As I am expecting it to be a highlight of our trip I thought lunch time to breakfast the next day may be a bit short.

Hi Wendy, my family hired an A/C houseboat 3 years ago in November in the Allepey region for an overnight cruise (started about lunchtime, ended mid morning the next day).
The first day was stunning with a really relaxed pace cruising around the canals, stopping for lunch, exploring a town or two. However the night time was a different matter with the lounge/dining area open to the insects after dark and the mosquitos drove us into bed very early under the nets. The cabins seemed pretty airless and hot despite having A/C. The boats tend to all tie up together near Allepey which means there are lots of people nearby too. We are going to be back to Kerala in November this year and will do some trips on the canals during the day, without the overnight stay this time. I am sure that others will have had different experiences but to me the key thing is the canal life in the day time and I am pretty sure you can get that experience a number of ways apart from the rice barges. Whatever you choose I am sure that you will have a fantastic time there! |

To have a good look around the smaller canals, hire a country boat.
They are pretty cheap(approx 300rps per hour) 4 hrs is usually enough. Can Highly Reccomend and a Photographers dream. Most Houseboat users feel the O'Night journey is enough, whilst some may cruise for 2 - 3 days to Totally unwind after some Tiring travel on the roads and trains. vandy ![]() |

We only did a 1 night cruise but we loved it so much we didn't want it to end, so i would recommend 2 nights. Maybe Kollam-Kumarakom would be a good option.
