Guesthouse in Kochi - suggestions pls?
Hi,
Will be arriving in Kochi late at night and wanting to email a guesthouse in advance to pick me up from the airport. Hopefully somewhere in the fort! Something cheap - R300 or less a night for a double would be great, and hopefully in the Fort (but open to other suggestions). Other prequesite is they have an email address I can use to contact them on! Thanks for your help. |

I'm not sure if I get this. As far as I know Fort Cochin is an island part of town, there's no accommodation inside any fort as such. (There's no fort for that matter. Well maybe some remnants, the name must have sprung up somewhere right. The area is nice to walk around in though, nothing special but OK.) I may be wrong. What made you feel there is a fort?
The other (landward) part is pretty much called Ernakulam (and then some). Can't help you with the rest, sorry. You can stay in the one area or the other, as you like. Finding rock-bottom accommodation was no problem to me but it's been a while. Great food too. Ask around. There was no email at the time, made things much simpler. Just show up and see where it gets you kind of thing.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but out of my experience it's alsmost impossible to find a double room in Cochin (on the island) during the month of January for under 300. Especially if you want to get picked up at the airport. You would have to plan to invest more money!
But have a great trip! |

Fort used to be quite a bit more expensive than Ernakulam yes. Remember watching a giant thunderstorm brewing way out where inland from the (Dutch/Jewish?) cemetary though all night (well until the last ferry left). Fantastic.

Try also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Kochi . It leads to a travel site at the bottom that you may or may not find useful. Might be that site has written the page though

Lot of new places come up in fort cochin.
Just be at the ferry , agents for the places to stay and Auto rikshaws will be taking you to these newly opened places. The prices will change next year once the travellers know about the places. |

hey sahara
I have booked at Casa Linda at Fort Cochin for Rs 400 per day for double room for my december trip. I don't think you can get a better deal this. Here is the Email: mail@casalindahotel.com The name of concerned person is Densal. You can check out their website at http://www.casalindahotel.com They can even arrange for the airport pickup but ofcourse at an additional cost. U can easliy book this hotel over the email, that's what i did. |

Hm. Damn. The place I stayed in is a renowned backpacker's place, I found it really good for what it was. Nice big and clean room, central hall with today's papers, nice manager, sort of thing, and costing really peanuts (45 Rs. or so for a single at the time).
It's in Lonely Planet but I don't have it with me. If it still exists, it's likely to be their top budget listing. If it's very close to the station I'm not sure, but it can't be far away. There's some good restaurants and a nice bookstore in the vicinity. (Hm, how's that for precise and practical information, eh. Well, one tries ) |
