Not easy - it's as rare as hens teeth! There is a specialist baker in Ernakulam who makes a variety of breads and I believe this includes whole wheat and breads with no sugar. I haven't found his shop yet but understand it is off of MG Road - I have promised myself that I will seek him out on my return later this year - if you find him please let me have his address. Last year he gave a demonstration of his breadmaking but I missed it.
Heinz salad cream might be difficult but mayonnaise is sold in Varkeys stores and I think in Abad Plaza in MG Road. |

Um... I went through the same pain when I landed in Ernakulam from US.
However, with persistence, almost everything can be found. I buy fish from the local fish market/shops, Beef most of the time from Varkeys, Chicken from Suguna or Reliance Delight, Vegetables from Kaloor market (or the closest market) or Reliance Fresh (I am sure More also will have, however, by the time I reach the shop after work, they have none left). If you are looking for Steak cut or similar, you will have to find a local butcher who is willing to do it for you. Ernakulam Market may be the best bet. Reliance Fresh and some Nilgiris are good for the exotic vegetables and herbs (lettuce, parsely, celery etc). Varkeys had most of the imported creams and sauces like Mustard, Mayonnaise etc. Summary: I found that I have to go to many shops to get the best items. But then, that is true even abroad! And also found that none of the stores are consistent. The quality, selection and treatment in branches of the same chain varied considerably. Spend sometime and make a list of stores where you will visit. Again, all the recommendations make sense only after you know where you are going to stay. it may not make sense to go to Nilgiris or Varkeys if they are far away from where you stay. |

Thanks CliveG.
I found the mayonnaise at Varkeys and I have been to Abad Plaza in MG Road. However I am unable to find the baker in Ernakulam. I looked everywhere off of MG Road without success. Do you perhaps know somebody who could tell me where to find this baker? |

Hi Xennt,
There is a place called City Stores just off the corner of Chitoor Road and Banajee Road. It is a little store which seems to sell everything but good bread. The two guys who run it are very friendly. Tell them that the tall English guy with the ponytail who comes each year sent you! They may know where it is or ask the autorickshaw drivers who have a stand outside. |

Hi Xennt,
I have had a thought! The artisan baker may well be in Panampilly Nagar which is off South over bridge. This might help you if you ask around. |

Try Abad Plaza in MG Road next to the Abad Hotel - the sell Premier Loo rolls or City stores in Chitoor Road opposite the bus stop.

Hi CliveG,
Unfortunately I am unable to find City Stores. I would like to ask them about the location of the artisan baker you mentioned. Can you be more specific about what exactly to look for, please? Thanks, |

Found It
Thank you Gentlemen,
I went to the Panamilly Nagar and indeed found the Bakery. The quality of the bread is reasonable compared to anything else available over here. ![]() |

The 'Bakery' is merely a counter located in the Lumiere SeaGrill restaurant. But they do sell whole wheat bread indeed.
The address is: G-268 11th Cross Road Panampilly Nagar, Kochi 682 036 Phone: 0484 401 20000 Email: lumieremd@hotmail.com URL: http://www.lumiere.co.in |
