I just had a look at the Fort Kochi website that I posted in Post
No 7 and yes Fort House looks like the place I visited quite some
time ago and had a meal there.Really like the Open Plan about the
Place.

And yes you can see in the picture of Fort House in that website
a big branch of the mango tree I refer to.

Casa Mia

We recently stayed at two places: Green Woods Bethlehem Homestay (Lonely Planet recommended) and Casa Mia Homestay (newer place, not in guide books).

Green Woods was fine, and the owners are indeed very nice people, but the property was too far away from the action for our taste. It's a 20-25 minute walk from the Chinese fishing nets.

Casa Mia deserves to be in the guidebooks. It's much closer, only a ten minute walk from the nets. The man of the house is a contractor who built the place himself and did it right. Everything down to the fittings, doorhandles etc. is quality. The upstairs has three rooms, one larger room with a balcony over the street, and two rooms tucked away from the street, slightly quieter. There is a common room with two daybeds and a large wooden desk perfect for doing work - my friend and I holed up for three days working on a web site project. The decor is very much Zen - clean and clear with dark woods contrasting warm white walls. The family is nice and provide good homecooking for Rs 100 per head, per meal (more, if you want 'non-veg').

We rented two of the rooms for Rs 600 each, per night.

Recommend Green Woods and Casa Mia, but next time I stay in Kochin it's Casa Mia.

I also want to mention that virtually any homestay you use in Kochin, will push some kind of tour at you. They'll want you to sign up for backwater tours, elephant rides, visit the mahogany forest, etc.

If you are open to this, great. But, if you don't want to be bothered about it, make it clear UP FRONT that you are not interested in any guided tours. If you stay somewhere and they make you feel uncomfortable even once, give them feedback, let them know that visitors will appreciate it much more if they are given a brochure or something, and not bothered about it any further.

The reason I say this is, the Indian business psyche can be pushy and lacking grace. Nobody wants to have to keep saying no all the time, on top of all the no-saying that is required on the streets in a place like Kochin.

An alternative for booking such things is the official tourist office near the chinese fishing nets. They can book all that stuff if you're interested, and you may feel like you're getting a fairer shake.
