Google Earth might help you to make your own estimation, but of course it is hard to measure winding roads. It would give you a feel for it though. Come to think of it... try Google Maps or MapMyIndia... they will even calculate a route and give you distance!

I'd be guessing, but 140km doesn't seem nearly enough.

Kovalam-Trivandrum 15 kms-Adoor 100-Chengannur 25-Changanaserry 20-Ponkunnam 35-Peeremade 50-Vandiperiyar 15-Thekkady 20, which totals upto 280 kms.

First the drive is on M C Road from Trivandrum till Changanaserry, where you turn onto a state highway and climb up the hills to Thekkady via rubber estates and tea plantations.

I'm sure that having those individual distances will help the OP with taxi negotiations.

Did you round each of those figures to the nearest 5 miles, or up to the next five miles? Rounding up would explain why your total is 20km higher.

The reason for the differences in distances could be because the conventionalk route to Thekkady will take you via Kottayam, adding 20-30 kms more. I have worked out a route that leaves M C Road at Changanassery and cuts across to the K K Road (Kottayam-Kumili Road)joining it at Vazhoor, saving some 30 kms and avoiding the bustle of Kottayam city.

Further, I have done some round off (1-2 kms either way), and the distances can vary slightly.

The distances are based on my actual drives, and taken from my log books, so they are definitely more accurate than what you will get from the online maps.

To give you exact break-up from one of my trip logs:

Trivandrum (near Thampanoor)-Kilimanoor 39 kms-Kottarakara 34-Adoor 20-Pandalam 9-Chengannur 16-Tiruvalla 9-Changanassery 9-Vazhoor 24-Ponkunnam 12-Kanjirapalli 6-Mundakayam 17-Peermede 25-Kuttikanam 5-Vandiperiyar 11-Kumili 16-Thekkady 4, totalling to 256 kms

Add 16 kms to the above for the distance from Kovalam to my start point in Trivandrum, and you get to 272 kms. I have added some extra for the route that you will take through the city - either the bypass which will take you via Vallakadavu, Chacka and TechnoPark to Kazhakuttam or via the city to Kazhakuttam.

Question Time Factor

Hi,

Thought this might be the right place to post this query--do any of you road experts have an idea how long a trip from Thekkady back down to Trivandrum will take?

Factors:
1. We could take SH8 via the hills if the roads are good, since reviews online seem to suggest beautiful hill country down this path. This seems to be Thekkady - Peermade - Kuttikanam - Mundakkayam - Erumali - Pattanamthitta - Punalur - Anchal - Ayoor - Trivandrum.

What we aren't able to judge is, what is the timeline such a trip would take, given we're hiring a car and driver for the journey?

2. We have the luxury of time. KTDC's website lists a "motel" at Punalur, where the caretaker very kindly told me he would hold a room. But we have no idea if this place would be at all the thing--in terms of hygiene or safety, leave alone food quality.

Is Punalur the best place for an overnight halt in this journey? Or can someone suggest a better spot, i.e. a better hotel as well?
Sometimes I think the biggest proof there's intelligent life out there is that they haven't contacted us. --Paraphrased from Calvin

Around 240 kms from Trivandrum to Thekkady/Kumili/Periyar on the MC Road till Changanaserry, district roads till Vazhoor, then KK Road. Should take you 5-7 hours, depedning on time of departure (I have done it in 4 hours, having left TVM at 3 am.

The alternative route via Punalur, Pathanapuram to Kanjirapalli is slower, almost the same distance, nothing more picturesque.

No, Punalur is not a great place to stay, stay another seedy little town. Better to go on. If you must stay at any place on the way, Peeremede is a lovely place, being in the midst of tea estates, but it is very close to Thekkady itself.

Thanks

Thanks much, hvkumar. I'm taking your advice and planning to be back in Tvm by end of day rather than stop anywhere en route (though there's always a possibility of a Peermedu or Vagamon halt taking this journey a day further!).

Also see on Google there's a Kottayam-wise option that seems to keep me on highways, NH 220 then NH 47. Does this route make sense? Timewise/ quality-of-road wise?

If this makes sense, and given we are in favor of being laid-back about the driving parts of the trip (in order to fit in the odd fancy to take a back-road someplace and back), could anyone give me an idea of good accomadation in Kottayam?
