enjoying wildlife on a backwater boat in Kerala?

I've surfed through many posts on both backwaters topic and wildlife in Kerala topic. However, I have not found an answer to the question - which area in Kerala ables to see the most of wildlife from a backwaters boat (as our time is limited - 1-2 days). Anyway, maybe its an unjustified dream of mine that one can see different animals from a boat in the middle of the lake/river , but then let me know. We would start out from Goa in the evening and reach Kerala in the early morning. Which backwater area would you suggest, if we would like to go back to Goa at same night? If one day trip does not make any sense, we can also spend two days/1 night. Experts, share your wisdom and knowledge

You should see lots of birds, maybe small things, maybe swimming things like snakes --- but the backwaters are more about village life than wildlife.

Nick's right of course, mostly birds and insects to be seen. Otters if you're lucky. It's always hard to see mammals any time except dawn and dusk.

Don't rush your visit. Stay overnight and go out early one morning. If you go to Kottayam you can take a walk in the sanctuary there, but you need to go really early - arrive around 6 - to make the best of it. I think we arrived before seven but still missed the otters!

We did a few trips on boats of various sizes and in different places. Bear in mind these waterways are mostly pretty busy as they are the highways for the area to a large extent. Kerala is a very densely populated state, with most people in the coastal strip where the backwaters are. The best wildife sites are in the hills.
