Contacts in Kochi

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I are moving to Kochi 02/02/2010. We are from Denmark, and have both been living abroad, but never in India. We would like all the help we could get, getting settled in Kochi.
Do you have som pointers? we want to live in nice and "safe" place(not saying kochi i a very violent place) , what can you recoment?
We would also like if some people who live in Kochi would like to meet over a meal(i will pay) when we are there.

Best Regards
Nis Jensen

Hi Vandy,

No never, but is really looking forwards to it I have never been to India so it is all going to be very new. But i have been living 2 years in Uganda and 1 year in Kenya, so i have tried living with less luxury than we are used to in Denmark

Hi Nis

The FIRST step is to establish if you could handle Living in India

It's a Pretty Full On Place.

Kerala is my favourite place in India so far.

BTW, I spent some Quality Party Time with some Danes in Goa,2006.

... Before people go out of their way to try and answer this, they may want to see the poster's other thread and its replies too: Starting business in India?

They would clearly be connected to anyone trying to adequately answer you.

I'd personally say you should stop asking even until you have some idea of what you're asking about; but then and as usual what do I know.

Hello Nis, it will never be difficult for you to get settled in Kochi. I am from Kochi, but now in Germany.
How long you are planning to be in Kochi. As for the matter of being, kochi never had a history of violence.
The people are quite friendly and you can get settled there easily.

I have read both your threads and feel that you need to do some more research before considering starting a business and living in Kochi. As has been mentioned it is not easy to start a business - I have a friend who owns a multi million pound business and even he, with all his resources, has found it very difficult to the point of giving up.
You do not say what kind of accommodation you are looking for- hotel, homestay, self catering etc or your budget.
Also have you experienced the same kind of weather. From February onwards the humidity can be as higher has more than 95% with temperatures of 32 upwards. While I stay in Kochi for 3 months each year I return in mid february as the humidity is so oppressive and uncomfortable if you are not used to it. I like Kochi for the people, the food and the culture but it is not an entertainment centre like maybe Mumbai or New Delhi and the place goes very quiet after about 9.30pm.
Maybe a short trip as a holiday to experience Kochi would be a better starting point.

Thanks for your answers

As I say in the other tread I'm no longer considering starting/moving my business to Kochi. I will keep it in Denmark and run it from Kochi.

We are going to get 6 month turist visas, and in June and Juli we will be in Denmark, I have read that it is very humid in Kochi at that time, and its at that time we would have to go back to renew our visas anyway.

We are going to rent an appartment, our budget is about 30.000 rs a month, but i can see it is very cheap compared to Denmark. I'm already in contact with som realastate company.
our plan is to stay at a hotel for about 2 weeks, and in this time look at appartments, and find the right one

I would say u have placed journey correctly. as the monsoon starts by june and it will rain all the time.
And regarding your stay in Koch, I would recommend you to contact 2-3 real estate company simultaneously and then weigh it out. Then only you will get an idea of the relative price. I would say that 30000 rupees a slightly over priced one.

Moreover, there are certain cottage or villas with kitchen and all other facilities, just like a home, available which permit longs stays. You can contact them also to know which one would work out cheaply. I have an address which I have reccommended to some of my German friends. But I dont know how much good that is since I have stayed there for just one night and not loner than that.

30K per month is overly priced for Kochi.I can rent mine,am now in Mexico, for half that amount. You need to keep searching Try Apple homes,Star homes and other builders they have furnished apartments that are given out for short term.mostly like 10K/15K max.Such apartments are meant for office to host there clients ,for a time that hotel stay would be costly.

hai yes 30k in cochin is way high. it will be a nice place to live , and you said no violence, and quiet place after 9 pm. small city so moving around wouldn't be a problem. when looking for a place pls do keep in mind to look at suburbs in kochi as central kochi is crowded, noisy and traffic. best places to live would be Edapally, elamakkara, Kakkanad, tripunithura etc., but of course it all depends what you would like to do in cochin. Mostly people locate houses so that they can do shopping easily and near to educational institutions for children. Serviced apartments could also be a good choice for the 6 months trial so that you get used to the place and decide. anyways best wishes
