Cochin, Backwaters, Munnar, Madumalai Park, Mysore and back to Cochin..
Hi. We will go to Cochin in the middle of January and from there to the backwaters. We have read a lot info and have decided to go around with a canoe or hand driven boat there instead of houseboat unless we can find a good rate for 4 persons.
After we will go to Munnar but skip Periyar and head to Madumalai Park instead. We heard that they have a much better wildlife there and many more wild elephants than Periyar.... anyone else knows ??? From Madumalai we will go to Mysore and then back to Cochin to fly back to Goa (in the middle of February). What is the best way to go from Munnar to Madumalai ? And then from Madumalai to Mysore. By bus or car with driver ?? And the best way to get from Mysore to Cochin ?? Thank you so much Ingela and Alex |

If it's not too late, this post might help you.
From Munnar, you need to get a bus back to Ernakulam (Around 140 kms , 4 Hours) and from Ernakulam get a train Or Bus to Calicut(225 kms followed by another bus to Mysore (214 kms) Or you could board one of the overnight buses from Ernakulam which will reach Mysore directly in around 11 Hours. From Mysore, you need to board Ooty bound bus to reach mudumalai Sanctuary (Around 90 kms - 2 1/2 hours). Your other options might be Bandipur Sanctuary (on the same road just 15 kms before Mudumalai) OR Nagarhole even (Just do a search in this forum and you will get the complete info on the same - But this could be done ONLY in a car). Hope this helps Velu |

if the budget permits- get a car to take you through mudumalai.
the bus journeys are pretty tiring, and the roads are currently not in their best state(what i hear). The route would be from munnar to calicut then from there to mudumalai / bandipur. As for the backwater- since there are 4 of you - i suggest taking the houseboat. Its hassle free, and you can spend more time relaxing. There are some nifty ones with Air Conditioners so incase the heat is too much, you can consider cooling yourselves down ![]() From Mysore - to mudumalai - i dont think there are buses plying, so that journey needs to be done by car. |

As far as I know, all buses plying from Bangalore / Mysore to ooty go via Nanjangud-Gundlupet-Bandipur-Mudumalai-Pykara-Ooty.
And Road condition it's good upto Gundlupet followed by poor upto Bandipur (Entire stretch is not poor) BUT around 8 to 9 bridge work is going on and hence we need to take the side road and from Bandipur , it's good. And yes, if we could afford, car travel always is better than changing buses !. |
